Cost me 20 bucks for a new lock. I used a hack saw to cut off the old one. Tried to pick the lock for 2 hours with paper clips. I've successfully managed to pick locks before but they were REALLY crappy pad locks that cost 2 or 3 bucks. I also tried the credit card trick but the door jam was too deep. Ended up cutting the door handle off with a hack saw. :(

Oh well switching out the old lock with the new one at least only took about 3-4 minutes.

How did cutting off the handle (which only rotates something inside the door) solve the problem? I.E. you cut off the handle...which connects to the lock...that you didn't have the key for anyway...

Discuss or clarify please.

Cut off the handle, pull out the metal rod inside that connects the two sides then use a pair of pliers to turn the lock shaft. This is just a bedroom door lock not a heavy duty deadbolt. The lock simply prevents the handle from turning.

Ah, OK. I get it now. I thought you were talking about "a front door" or such. You actually owned yourself by locking yourself out, then you unowned yourself by figuring out how to get inside, which means that the you that figured out how to get inside owned the other you that locked that other you outside. Get it?

Good job, nonetheless!!

Think about this for a second. It wouldn't work. :D

If you can get at the hinges it works. I did it once when I got locked out of the house. I popped the pins out of the hinges on the back door and then pried the side of the door with the hinges out of the door frame. Once that's done you just slide it sideways to pull the bolt of the lock out of the other side of the door frame. If where the bolt engages the door frame has a little bit of wiggle room it's pretty easy to do.

Ahh ok but that sounds like a poorly installed door. The hinges should always be on the side that you want to lock someone out of.
