My 17 inch IBM P70 is now running at 1600X1200@75HZ. Is there anything I should know, or is this setting known to permenantly damage this particular monitor? Specs should be 1280X1024@75HZ max. Intresting though..

My Graphics card is stock (Aww..)
My CPU is stock. :Q
My monitor is overclocked like heck! 😀😛😉

Well, it depends. The specs may be wrong. If the settings were available via plug-n-play/dcc, you should be fine; but if you are otherwise "forcing" the monitor to accept input it wasn't rated for... you'll quick burn out the monitor.

Merry Christmas!

Are you working within the recommended frequences of the monitor? Otherwise your monitor could get damaged permanently and go out of sync! You'll be also voiding your warranty if you run out of spec

It's used, doesn't have a warranty, and it's running way outa spec. I'm just testing it out for fun..
You know, like the kinda people who rev their 9700 pro's up to 450/400 core/mem just for a single run of 3d mark. I wish it could handle this forever..

Hehe 😀 You angry with Santa for not gifting you a new monitor and want to destroy this old one so that he's forced to get a new one today??

My monitor is rated at 1600x1200 @ 75 hz, I'm running it at 100. It will sync to 2048x1536 @ 60 hz although the max resolution is listed as 1792x1344 @ 60 hz.

gosharkss would be the one to ask about potential problems.

It's not surprising that the major problem you face when running a monitor out of specs is heat from the additional power required. The first thing to go, and usually in a spectaculer manner, is the horizontal sweep circuit.

mmm do I hear the sounds of a dremel in the background 😛

Just like any kind of overclocking, it will probably last for quite a while. Nonetheless, the life of the monitor will be reduced significantly. In fact, I had my monitor running at 100Hz when it should have been at 85Hz for several months. However, I started doing some comparisons and came to the conclusion that the difference between the two settings is extremely hard to notice and not worth the risk.

I usually like to overclock my equipment for about 2 years. Then, I pass on my equipment to my brothers for their computers and set the clocks at normal speed. They aren't as sensitive to minor changes as I am. What's my point? Well, you could go my route and just set it back to it's normal rate if you plan on getting a new monitor and handing down your current one. =)
