I ordered it. now what will I have to do?

Ordered this today:
1.33 Ghz Tbird
Epox 8k7a
512MB pc2100 Crucial
60GB 60GXP
16xDVD
MSI 831 GeForce 2 pro 64MB

What drivers will I need to install and it what order? I will put win98SE on first. I've heard 4in1's mentioned numerous times here, but I really have no clue what they are or when I put them on or if I even need them.
No rush, Cause I won't be getting the case, SX830, till next week friday. And one more thing. With the hard drive size, does anyone have GOOD experience with a certain size of partitions. I will be gaming, DV video editing also. I was thinking 30GB OS+games+apps, 15 GB for Video Editing(for quicker de-fragging? i heard that you need to if you edit video), and 15GB for MP3's and movies that are complete or ready to burn. I have heard that it's good to put the OS on its own partition of about 2gig but I don't see the point in that.

I really don't want to mess this up. This has been a lotta work to get the money for this. BTW this is my first time assembling a computer, although I've upgraded my mobo+cpu+ram before.

The partitioning depends on how you will use the machine. If you feel you will install Windows once and deal with any potential problems yourself, then a OS partition is a waste. If you think you may need to reinstall Windows multiple times (ie something stops working so you just reinstall instead of trying to fix it yourself), then a separate partition is well worth it. I see no reason to have the MP3's on a separate partition, I'd put it with the games and applications. As for defragging, you may save a few seconds of work everytime you spend an hour defragging (but many people find this to be of little use). On the rare occasion when I will defrag, I prefer to leave the computer (overnight, in the shower, etc.), so you might as well defrag everything.

Thanks, yeah I usually don't defrag that often I just thought you were supposed to more if you were doing stuff with video editing because of the movin files and deleting and modifying stuff all the time.

Anyone have any advice about the other stuff?

For the drivers, no you don't need the VIA 4in1. Just goto Epox's website and download the drivers needed for the 8K7A. You don't need the audio drivers unless you plan on using the onboard audio. 😉

When you firt get the OS install finished, install the latest Via 4 in 1's first before any video or sound card drivers. Install all the 4 in 1 drivers except the AGP driver. You only want to install the INF and IRQ routing drivers in Win98SE, and only the INF and PCI IDE Busmaster drivers in Win2K. You then need to get the latest AGP Miniport drivers from AMD's site and install the correct one for your OS. Then install the remaining hardware drivers and update Windows and IE, and your good to go.. 🙂

AMD AGP Miniport Drivers

Via 4 - in - 1 drivers

🙂

I feel ashamed to admit it, but if you didn't notice, there is no sound card in my list😱 I will get one in a couple weeks but for now I will be using the onboard...

thanks insane.

"For the drivers, no you don't need the VIA 4in1. "

Yes he does, the Epox 8K7A has the Via 686B Southbridge, so he does need the 4in1's, just not the AGP driver.

I have no doubt that it doesn't work 🙂. But I found it much easier to goto Epox's website and dl only the needed driver's they recommend you install. Instead of having to goto AMD's site and VIA site and install part/most of the 4in1's then install AMD's drivers. Personal preference I guess. 😀

Okay, so basically they are the same thing, just the ones from the Epox site are the ones I specifically need for my board. I just install all of the ones from the Epox site?

I think I'm gettin it...

I dunno... Anyone have problems on that EpoX board? I had complete freezes in 98Se after long periods of inactivity (not power management interface!!) As well as DVD cuttoff in Windows 2000. It would stop completely. All after installing all of the combinations you all described (over several formats, it was tiring) Is anyone absolutely certainabsolutelywhat combo will work on your system? Also, i cannot overclock on this board!! AXIA 1.33 Ghz cpu on the Epox 8k7a; whenever I push the FSB past 134 or the multiplier past 10X, even to 10.5, I get the BSOD in Win2k (KENEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED) I cannot figure out why...
AXIA Y core 1.33 Ghz Athlon
Epox 8k7a (tried o'c with both BIOS revisions)
256MB Crucial RAM 2.5 CAS
Thermaltake SuperOrb
1.77-1.87 VCore, 44-50 Degrees C

I desperately need help, as the most I can get out of the proc is 1340 Mhz
10X 134!!!

The Super Orb is one of the worst HSF for the Athlon's. The Retail AMD HSF will do better than those orb's.

Jittles:

I did what I suggested to you originally with my Epox, and it worked fine. Splice seems to think differently, so I guess it's up to you to choose what to do. I just know the Via 686B Southbridge should require the drivers in the 4-in-1's, just not the AGP miniport drivers. Good luck and sorry...🙁

Do you have the JCLK1 jumper set correctly to 133Mhz? Apps would crash non-stop because I had the JCLK1 jumper set to 100Mhz and the BIOS FSB setting set to 133Mhz, obviously overclocking the PCI bus.

One more quick question:
Will the board ship with the latest bios? Or more importantly, how can I find out once I get it?

Another question I just thought of: Is it possible to install Windows from another computer over the network? I guess no because there would be no drivers for the NIC but it would be quicker since my friend has my Win98 CD and I have it copied to my hard drive.
