I am waiting on an extra check from work to get another couple of gigs. How will vista run on my 1 gig. Will all my games come to a screeching halt? I was considering going vista 32bit right now.

What games are you planning on running? 1GB is okay for some games but after a little while it might start swapping a lot. 2GB is much better in this regard.

Vista uses maybe 100-200mb more than XP. When XP already loads 500mb or so, that extra 200mb is make or break. I wouldnt game on XP with 1gb anymore, but I definitely wouldnt even consider it with Vista. Vista will run just fine with 1gb, but dont bother gaming until you get 2gb, which is MORE than enough.

There is a lot of truth in these words.

Wait.. so are you guys saying 2 gigs is fine and that it would be a waste to buy 3 gigs?

Not really a waste to buy 3 gigs because you will always need more ram in the future and you may even need 3 gigs of ram for some dx10 games. Who knows.

I am sure the next windows os will need at least 4 gigs of ram.

For now, 2gb is just fine. I've had a memory monitor open while I've played both oblivion and BF2142 on full settings, and it still hasnt maxed out 2gb. It can come awfully close at times, but as long as its never fully maxed out, youre not going to see a scrap of difference in performance.
