Well, theres a ton of lightning outside my house as I post this @11:33PM my place and I've felt my house shake on the 2nd floor about 4 or 5 times now from lightning strikes nearby. Anyway, the power went out for a sec or two and I'm like 5h17! I just screwed over some work i was doing, yes I save every so often but it still sucks losing 20 minutes of work because I hate doing things over again so I do em' right the first time through.

My monitor went out and I said "5h17," under my breath. The power came back on in a minute and I remembered I only connected the computer to the UPS connections that provide backup power and my monitor to the other UPS connectors that aren't provided with power, but just surge protection. My monitor came on and I'm like "Thank God!"

Anyway, the UPS was very helpful today and I thought I'd just post about it...

I think I will now ask the UPS question for which I have been wanting an answer for a long time..... everybody laughs at this question.

I have an APC 650 BackUPS Pro. If the power gets low can I plug the output of the UPS into its Input and get it to charge itself ??

I'm not an EE or anything, but wouldn't that cause the thing to blow up (in the same way that shorting a battery can do so)?

I'm not too smart when it comes to Electricity either but I get the feeling you're right. When I made that reply, it was with very little thought... I'll edit it in a sec

But, i think it can cause some damage, how much? i have no clue...

Uh, theres no way for something to "recharge itself", without any external powersource at all. NO WAY, super impossible. Remember the law of energy conservation(i think), energy cannot be created or destroyed? Well, how can it recharge itself? It cannot create energy.

I love my UPS too. I have my computer, monitor, cable modem, and router all hooked up to it. If the power goes out, my net connection stays good. Gotta love it.

I love my UPS, but only in the winter time... For what ever stupid reason, in my neighborhood, with everyone using their air conditioner in the summer time the line voltage seems to dip just a little too low and my UPS will give a line error and beep all day long. Very annoying.

I'm not sure if the one I have is just super-sensitive to line voltage, but I find I can't use it at all in the hot weather. Anyone have a good suggestion or a brand to use? The one that gives me grief is an APC 350 watt jobbie... can't recall model #, but it's the black one shaped like a wedge, with the outlets on the top (not the beige rectangular shaped ones with the outlets on the back).

I hate Fedex, must be the local service I suppose. Tracking numbers aren't updated enough, the service is slow, and they drop my stuff off in the late afternoon. UPS on the other hand updates tracking numbers very often, quick delivery, and they drop it off in the morning. I like USPS Priority the best, but USPS' Tracking service is the worst. You'd be lucky to get more than 2 updates per shipment, and they are often a day behind before its updated.

anyways back on topic.... :p

As said you cannot charge something with itself. It's against the laws of physics and we try to abide by the laws of physics here at anandtech ;)
Thats like saying, if I pour my 8oz glass of water to another cup and back again, will I have more water? Obviously not.
Your UPS in effect is like a glass of water and the only way to fill it up is a 3rd party source of power like the wall outlet.

I also love my UPS. :)
Its saved my butt so many times. The power grid for my neighborhood is teh suck!! Always going out for a few seconds or brownouts. My UPS allows me to keep my computer up and running through those small little 5 second blackouts or brownouts. The only thing is that the warning alarm is LOUD AS HELL (APC brand) :p I have been woken up by that shrieking UPS at 4 am a few times :disgust: :p
