You tried to help that is what counts. I have done the same before with people trying to fill prescriptions and not having the money. Sometimes people will accept your help sometimes not. One thing that seems to figure into it is the age of the person. Older people are less likely to accept cash from a stranger, not because they don't trust you but because they often are too proud too even when it is in their own family.

I went to check on my parents , I check on them about once a month, and opened their refrigerator to find a half gallon of milk, half loaf of bread, some bacon and that was it. They still had over 1 week to go before they got their social security checks. I was angry , why didn't they tell me, I had no idea they had been doing without this way. The response was that they didn't want to bother anyone and that everyone had their own families to take care of. I had told them in the past and helped them in the past when they were having money issues but even though I had done it before they still didn't feel comfortable asking me again. Sometimes you have to almost force help on people.

This girl at a gas station asked me for money so she could get some gas. I could see some nice spots on her arm from the heroin. I told her if she split the goods with me(while pointing to her needle bruises) than I would give her gas money. She got offended and walked away in her zombie stupor.

OP - You're my hero. I have considered buying people their groceries MANY times. I have just never pulled the trigger. It's not that I am nice (though it is free groceries to them), it's more that I can't stand how ridiculously slow some people are.

Case in point: The other night I was trying to buy two tomatoes and an avocado. I am behind this couple and they have two (or three?) separate batches of groceries. The first batch they paid for with some sort of food stamp or welfare check. Apparently there's a little folded brochure that tells you what items qualify and which don't. The cashier, who was incredibly slow himself, tells them that this particular box of cereal will put them over the $36 limit. So then they ask if they can get a different box instead. Then the cashier has to ask another cashier if that's ok, then get the bagger boy to go switch the boxes. Then they ring up the second batch of items and now the slow husband is trying to pay with a debit card. Then they decide they want to add another melon to the party. So he has to go get the melon.

I wish I could just throw cash at people and get them to leave.

When I was at a grocery story the cashier forgot to include a 12 pack of Coke (or something similar) from the people in front of me, and added it to my queue as if it was mine. The cashier was half way through my collection of items. The person in front of me was like: "Oh thats mine!" and the cashier "Oh sorry" to me. I'm just like "Let's not worry about it. Just take it, lets not void this entire things and rescan my items. I'll pay for it.". They said thank you and left but looked sort of embarrassed about it. It's not like $4.59 is going to break the bank or anything.
