For some reason, this I/O shield I have pops in quite nicely from the inside of the case, however when I then try to mount the mobo, the padding on the shield creates enough space that doesn't allow me to lineup the holes.

What am I doing wrong? LOL

I'm thinking I might just have to peel this pad thing off the back of the shield because the thickness of the pad is about how much I'm off by on aligning the holes....

You don't remove the silver padding -- it's there to provide contact between the motherboard and the case so that the board is grounded. You might have to push a little (but not too hard), but you should still be able to get the board to line up with the standoffs.

I removed the padding because there was just no way the mobo would line up. I pushed a bit, but was concerned that I would bend the connectors. I guess I'll just have to risk that and since not many of the I/O shields have that pad, then I should be ok.

That's because those types of I/O shields have a couple of little metal tabs that stick out and contact the tops of some of the ports. The padded I/O shields don't have those tabs because they contact the fronts of the ports (at least when the metallic padding is there...).

Had the same problem with my P5Q Deluxe...but after a little push and putting one of the screws in it was fine.
