I/O Range Conflict

Just upgraded to windows XP for a friend who has an old Compaq. I formatted and everything went perfect except the modem is having a conflict and can't use the requested I/O range it needs. In device manager is says something like, "The device could not start because the firmware did not give the device the requested resources" or some bull like that. I tried un-checking use automatic configuration and setting the resources manually but no luck there. It appears the device that is using the modems I/O range is something called ISAPNP Read Data Port under system devices. If anyone can give advice and or tips and tricks that would be great. The only thing I can think of is physically switching the modem into a different PCI slot, which I doubt will fix the problem because she had 95 before and everything worked before as is. Thanks.

That "bull" is probably a BIOS problem. First I would try disabling PnP Aware OS in the BIOS, that'll cause it to do resource allocation instead of waiting for the OS to set it up, generally that's more consistent. Also some BIOSes let you reserve resources for ISA devices, you could try reserving whatever range is conflicting so that the BIOS assigns another range to the PCI modem. Moving PCI slots could fix the problem, but is unlikely as I believe the only thing wired to a PCI slot is the IRQ.

Thanks for responce, yah that's another part of the problem, the bios via wonderful Compaq is limited to say the least. I cant even acess most of the usual options. There is an option that says windows or dos OS install and I tried disabling that, but nothing changed as far as resources. Really annoying.
