OfficeMax will have the I/O Magic 8X +/- R DVD burner for $179.99 -$30 IR and $50 MIR starting on Sunday 12 -28. Apparently it is instore only as they are still not listing this item on their website. The drive is supposed to be a rebadged Optorite DD0401 which would make it a pretty good deal, but some buyers claimed they were getting Benq drives the last time OM had these on sale a couple of weeks ago when it was $119.99 ARs.

does anyone know if they are in stores (wouldn't make any sense) or if a coupon will negate any rebates?

Only rebate I ever screwed up on.

IO Magic with a 10 day postmark requirement!

Lots of others in this Hot Deals forum have complaints about IO Magic rebates.

Just an FYI,

On occasion when I have exceeded the postmark deadline. I've run down to the post office and told my friendly neighborhood postal worker my sorry situation. I then ask them if it's alright to place the postmark on the stamp and let me "accidentally" smear it with my thumb.

:D

They laugh at me but they have always let me do it. And I've always gotten the rebates so it does work. Usually I don't have to do it but when you get the occasional OfficeMax or CompUSA rebates that require you to send everything in by 7 days, I think they are being a little unreasonable.

Just a little tip to help us get what we have coming to us.

Davem, that's a good one. You can also photocopy the UPC and receipt, wait a few weeks, then phone/email in and act outraged that they haven't received your submission -- but yes, you could send in your photocopies.

At Officemax, the products go on rebate so frequently, you can take it into a b&m and get an updated receipt for a future rebate period. They are happy to do this at my local OM.

The really outrageous rebate I ran across recently had two rebates both with a 7-day reply period, one taking orig. UPC and photocopied receipt, and the other vice-versa -- and I'm sure they both couldn't wait to deny the rebate if you screwed up which went to which. And good luck keeping records of that all to follow up. They of course wanted 12 weeks (!) to mail me the checks.

OM stood behind 100% Cendyne rebates that I had outstanding when Cendyne went tits up! No reason to think they would't do that for I/O rebates.

I don't know how they could have been a BenQ. As far as I know, BenQ doesn't make an 8x dual format DVD writer.

Sorry about not listing the correct date that this starts. I saw it on OM's sneak peak and thought it was for this week. Never even looked at the date. 12-28 is when this sale starts. Guess they wanted to put it out 10 days early.

I went to OM at 9am this morning (Henrietta NY store). Picked up the IOmagic and a pack of pens. They accepted the $30 off Staples coupon. But they couldn;t find the rebate anywhere including On Line. SO the manager gave me and another guy an instanst $50 off. My total came to $75.58 including tax. Score...they had about 5 left. Benq drives. My bad, it is an Optorite.

Too bad it wasn't an Optorite. Not that I know anything about the reliability of the Benq, I have an Optorite DD0203 and really like the HD-BURN feature. Maybe that's why I/O Magic doesn't list that feature being available on their website under product information. That way they can rebadge whatever and stick it in the box. Cheap price though if it will burn DVDs reliably.

After making a mistake, it is an Optorite, then reading the reviews between Optorite and Benq, I wish it was a Benq. Great review....at cdrinfo.

you either look at the drive, and see what it says, or if there is enough experience here, people will post the defining parts of the s/n

Benq Review

Looks like the Benq might be pretty good based on the review. It probably would sell better if it were branded under Philips. Being able to set the Booktype is a big plus. Apparently the Benq is just a +R/RW drove and not dual format. The Optorite definitely doesn't have very fast extraction times, but I guess it comes down to what you are using the DVD burner for. I use mine to burn DVDs and HD-BURN CD discs. For extraction I use a Lite-On LTD-166 DVD ROM and for burning CDs I use a Lite-On 48X. Testing the extraction speed of the Lite-On LTD-166 versus the Optorite DD0203 ripping a factory pressed single layer 4.3 GB DVD I achieved the following results: Lite-On 5:14, Optorite 6:30. I didn't bother to test a dual layer disc but you should get the idea. DVD drives may be multi-functional, but they basically are still DVD burners. If you're not in a hurry to get anything else done I suppose it doesn't matter much.

Well that's screwed up that it said 12/28 online and the ad came in this morning's news paper. I decided not to get it tho. Sales tax on $150 kind of messes up the deal.

I went to local BM (RI) to check on I/O 8X drive. They had two in stock. I had a $30 coupon that OM emailed to me for use on line and wanted to see if they would accept it at BM. They did accept it but could not find the rebate $50 rebate form. So they gave the $30 instant, the $30 on line coupon and another $50 instant which brought it to $69.99, $74.89 out the door. Could not let it go for that price. My buddy ran down and got the other one.

It is a MagicSpin BDVDRW8D. It is packaged with limited software, Nero V 5.0, WinDVD v 4.0 and Sonic MyDVD and no IDE cable. Not sure who makes it yet. If you can tell me how to check I'll get back with the info.

It is installed, runs, reads CD's, play DVD's fine. Have done a burn yet, should have bought some media while I was there.

Might be worth your while if you have a coupon, YMMV. I hate waiting for rebates but if I can find one soon maybe I can make this an even better deal.

12/22/03 Burned first copy flawlessly!

OfficeMax knocking $50 off the price beats the crap out of waiting 8 weeks or more to get a rebate. It is unusual that their preview ad was 10 days in advance instead of 3 days.

Wow this sounds good. I'll have to go in tomorrow and give it a try. Maybe they will post the rebates online later and we could even get another $50 off!
