i/o error

I'm trying to backup an old 1.2 gig hard drive of mine by putting it in one my newer computers. Hooked everything up earlier, and I got an I/0 error message. I'm assuming that means there is too much (or not enough) power going to the drive for it to work right...why is this happening, and any suggestions as to how to fix it?
