I just built my new computer with the following components:
AMD XP 1600+ Processor
EPoX 8HKA+ Motherboard (latest BIOS @ 1/08/02)
512MB Crucial DDR PC2100 Memory
Pioneer DVD 106S Slot Drive
Lite-On CD Burner
Antec SX840 Case
Gainward CardXpress GeForce 3 64MB
SoundBlaster Live! PCI
LinkSys 10/100 Ethernet PCI card
I cannot download and install any large file. I have downloaded 3 files, sizes 70MB, 105MB, and 90MB, (all patches or freeware) and all three files give the same error message sometime while the files are being unpacked and copied onto a temp directory. The message says "An I/O error occurred while installing a file. This is normally caused by bad installation media or a corrupt installation file" At first I thought it was a problem with Windows XP Professional, but then I formatted the HD and installed Win2K (w/ sp2) and encountered the same problem. Upon futher research, I have found that other people were having these problems before but they never give a detailed enough description of what they have, hardware and software-wise, to come to a conclusion about what causes this problem. But it seems that it may be a problem with the AMD chip or the DDR memory, but I strongly feel it is a problem with the VIA chipset. I have looked everywhere and I have found no clear solution. Can anyone help? If you need more information, please let me know as I will be checking in frequently. PLEASE HELP I'M GOING CRAZY
