Actually, this is for someone else who just bought a new laptop. Previously, she used a wireless Uniden router to connect to her Verizon DSL, and it worked fine with the old notebook. Now, however, even though she can use the internet via someone else's unsecure wireless netwoek setup, when connecting to her Uniden router is will ask for a network key. I have no idea what that is and why would her old laptop using Win 98 not have asked for it?

Her old laptop had the key entered and saved and this is why it did not ask for it.
See if you can login into the router and see how the wireless encryption, most likely WEP, is setup.
