I noticed my psu fan is a lot quieter blowing in than blowing out (exhaust)

the psu fan is supposed to be an exhaust right? (i only have 1 fan in psu)

but i tried flipping it around, and it is so much quieter this way.

can i just leave it like this .. or is it not good for the system? it's an NMB.

I wouldn't, because in that case you are blowing the hot air from inside your PSU into your case.

I agree. Another idea may be to cut a fan hole on the back side of the PSU, opposite of where it is now. Close up any holes of on the bottom of the PSU or anywhere else except the original fan hole. And then mount the fan on the outside of the new hole you just drilled blowing through the PSU. This should take off some of the direct sound and still exhaust the hot air. I have a piece of acoustical foam taped to the wall behind my PSU fan that absorbs much of the sound of the fan.

:D I was thinking the same thing.
But to turn around the psu fan makes no sense. You really shouldn't do stuff like this without getting some kind of advice first. Your psu overheating is not a good thing. Try what BG4533 said, but with that low-output nmb take precaution. Make sure that you have plenty of positive case airflow so that there isn't a pull inward on the psu vents. It doesn't take much to overcome an low-output nmb.

if theres sound, its probably from a cheap psu and air rushing over the cheap air obstructing fangrill. if u have a nice wire fangrill then its just blasting a lot of air. get a thermally controlled psu. or if u feel like taking the risk of opening the psu...which u've apparently already done, buy a low rpm fan and replace it. or do as i have and hook the psu fan up to a rheobus/fanbus so u can control its speed with knob. assuming the rest of your system is well cooled, lowering the fan speed of the psu a bit shouldn't hurt. now if its 99degrees outside and ur playing games, better turn it up:) but thats what the knobs for anyhow.

i even wired my antec sl350 thermal controlled fans up to a rheobus. the thermalc ontrol was a bit bunk, it ran the fans too fast all the time. seems only the top of the line psu's the truepowers supposedly really control their fans to any real degree.

Duh. You "hear" sound because something has created a pressure wave in a fluid (air). The fluid takes some of the pressure wave along with it in the direction of its travel. Thus, if the air is blowing away from you, you will hear less sound. Plus, part of the sound you hear from a fan is air turbulence, which is being blown into the case instead of out, so you hear less of it. Try this: on a windy day, when the wind is blowing in a constant direction, have a friend shout at you from 100 yards upwind and 100 yards downwind. You'll hear less when the friend is downwind.

Can't believe you don't know this already...
