I've been using (playing) with Linux sporadically for years. Usually I'll get excited about a new distro that supposedly fixes all the issues I've had in the past, then after it doesn't work without me needing to be an uber-geek, I give up.

I got back into it recently and downloaded PCLinuxOS, Linux Mint, and a few others to just try out and play with.

Long story short, my laptop is now 100% Linux Mint. It was the easiest install and setup of my life. I got all the 3d goodies up and running without nearly 0 effort on my part. I can now watch a cool youtube compiz video like this one and do the exact same thing myself. Last year when I tried to get XGL/compiz/beryl/whatever working it was a nightmare. Now I just enable advanced desktop and that's it.

Eye candy aside, it just runs great, is easy to use, and has been by far my greatest Linux experience as of yet. Now it's time for me to try it out on my desktop and see if it will work as easily with dual monitors.

So what do you do with your computer once you're fully setup?

How is Firefox doing with Flash and streaming video/audio? Try THIS SITE and let me know if Firefox just hangs on you. I'm using Ubuntu 7.10 and when I go there Firefox locks that window and all of my other tabs/windows.

Edit: That link is not a 'rickroll' or NSFW site or anything. It's just a streaming feed of the local (Tampa Bay Area) sports talkshow.

The cube effect (aside from the transparency effect) was something that you could do with 3Dtop on Windows 98........

Also, while this looks cool, I fail to see how emulting an iPhone with your desktop GUI is something to rave about. How exactly will this make my Photoshop work or Quickbooks transactions more productive?

It works fine for me as well

You could do it with Windows 98? Really? Did it actually work? Was it actually functional? Please prove this to me, seeing as how I have no reason to believe you whatsoever. Something tells me if it actually worked and looked good, it would have actually incorporated itself to the main stream. It has had 10 years to make it.

Also, seeing as how it has been around longer than the iphone, your argument fails at logic. Perhaps the iphone is emulated them? If that's the case, obviously it's working for somebody.

As for productivity, you should try using it for yourself for a day, then see how difficult it is to go back to what you're used to. It sure is nice having a work desktop, a school desktop, a play desktop and a graphic/photo desktop. Makes all that fumbling through windows tabs nonsense a thing of the past.

Same here Alienwho. I've moved my laptop completely to Ubuntu 7.10 and compiz was running by default. No configurations needed. The only thing that I can't do with this machine is watch embedded quicktime vids. Anyone got a fix for that?

ps - I don't have a windows computer to use at home, I'm 100% linux.

Its a shame linux falls flat where unproductivity is concerned :p

Thanks guys... I had it working a short while ago but some update along the way broke it. The odd thing is, when it did work I didn't have a volume slider. Now that it's broken the slider is there but the feed doesn't start. ;)

Got to the bottom of it. I tried removing the MPlayer plugin and reinstalling and it didn't make a difference. Even tried removing the MPlayer plugin and going to the site without it. It didn't make a difference. Then a friend (Mavtech) reminded me of 'about:plugins'. Turns out I had the totem mozilla plugin installed. I removed it and reinstalled the MPlayer plugin and it works again. It does take 30 seconds or more to load and the volume doesn't work but I've got my sports stream back. :)
