I have always hated RPGs. I think they are boring, monotonous and dull and the whole "dungeons and swords and elves and archery" theme never appealed to me. In fact I always considered myself at least one tier above RPG gamers on the nerd scale.

Then last Tuesday my brother bought his copy of Oblivion to my place and I had a play. I just wanted to see what all the hubbub was about. Six hours later I finished that session. The next day after work I returned home with my own copy of Oblivion, a copy of the Knights of the Nine pack and the Prima strategy guide. Since then I have played every day, using almost every moment of my spare time. I'm averaging about 7 hours a day.

I haven't been this obsessed with a game for many years. I'm thoroughly enjoying it but I think it's time to cut down. This is my first visit to ATOT since I started playing (I usually spend at least a few minutes a day here) and I haven't been seeing much of my friends lately.

What the hell is it that is so addictive about these games? Who here has been addicted to an RPG? And how did you break free from it? I don't think it will be hard to cut down my Oblivion hours but I can see how some people would find it extremely difficult.

I was hooked for a bit, then I went back to WoW.

Not exactly an improvement.

Hehe..I'm partially addicted to Oblivion as well. Currently got my character to level 18. Couldn't resist cheating a little, though. The fact that you could only carry a limited amount of supply is a great idea and add to the realism, but it's a real PITA having to backtrack all the time when going dungeon seige. That adds too much time to the grind. I'm using the portable hole mod to resolve that problem.

Oblivion is far too slow for my tastes. I've tried many RPGs, but the only one I've enjoyed thoroughly is Paper Mario for the Game Cube. I fell in love with it instantly and found it to be a blast. :)

For PC gaming, anything much slower than Quake 3 is unbearably slow! :p

There are quite a few different kinds of RPG's, so given your reference first to elves and wizards and such - and then to Oblivion I'm assuming your reffering to the D&D / Action / Hack and Slash bype RPG only. Personally, I'm more into the Final Fantasy / Suikoden / Shadow Hearts / Dragon Quest type RPG's but I still know where your coming from.

I originally got Oblivion and played for maybe 5-10 hours, I realized how in depth the game was and how I would probably have to spend 100-200 hours on the game and decided to stop playing it. Just like that, cold turkey - even though I loved the game. I figure I'll go back to it when a) I have a better graphics card and b) when I have more time. I have a 7800GT, 2 GB of Ram and an Opteron 146 overclocked but it just didn't handle the game well enough IMO, but then again I've heard they improved it with patches and revs in nVidia drivers, which since I haven't played since the first week this game came out I can't comment on. Still, I plan on trying the game again once I have a DX10 card and a dual core and seeing if my comp runs it better.

As for other types of RPGs, I get addicted to them more easily and I'm ok with it because its only once in a while, and its usually only 40-50 hours of my life I have to devote to it. Dragon Quest VIII, Shadow Hearts 3 and FF XII are the only 3 in the last year plus that I've absolutely had to play and thats not too much of my life. Like maybe 150 hours on 3 games, where as I know people who have spent that on Oblivion alone and still play.

Then there are the WoW addicts that spend 150 hours on it in one month, perhaps less - those people are a lifeless breed if I've ever seen one. Its funny because my roommate is like "why do you talk smack about WoW, when you know you'd love the game". To which I reply that a) I'm smart enough not to spend money on a game that has a monthly fee, and b) yea, I may love it and yea, I may get addicted to - which is all the more reason that I'm not even going to try it. You know cocain may be a blast too, and just like with WoW - I'll never know.

I remember the times when I was addicted to video games: Oblivion, Rune Scape, OGame, GTA San Andreas.

I have to say, life has been much better ever since I stopped gaming. I have so much more time to do other important things.

Yeah I definitely sank a good portion of my life into Oblivion. I was actually playing during my lunch breaks when I went home :p

I just stopped playing because I got tired of doing all the little quests. I probably finished ~ 95% of the game.

I'm using a horse saddlebag mod thats slightly more realistic than the portable hole. You have to keep running up the entrance to drop your loot on the horse but it's better than going to town. It made the game much more enjoyable.

They're addictive because of the constant and instant "rewards" they keep supplying your brain with. Real life can't compare. Most people who get addicted to MMORPG's (or any game for that matter) typically have at least mild ADD.

To kick the habit i'd suggest uninstalling the game. If you don't want to go that far and just want to limit the amount of time you play, try setting an alarm clock next to your computer. Set it for an hour or however long is appropriate for your schedule... when it rings, get up. If that alone isn't motivation enough, try putting a picture of your wife/girlfriend/kids/parents/friends/etc next to it. When the times up and you see that picture, imagine how they feel about you spending so much time playing a game.

Meh, I played Oblivion for a couple of hours and it got boring. Guess I'm just not into single player games at all.

I found Oblivions lack of dialogue, convsersation, story baed NPCs, and an overall dull main story to make the overall game pretty boring myself. It looks great though, and a lot of modders have addressed some of my gripes with it. Unfortunately, my primary complaints are the lack of conversation and solo based play, which seem to be hard wired into the engine. I've seen some party member mods, but they are more akin to henchman than true party members.

I think it's clear that many of us subconsciously find much lacking in the convenience of our sanitized modern lives.

Haha I feel exactly the same way.

I'm running Oblivion on an AMD64 3500+, 1.5gb RAM and 7600gt with some mild overclocking, it runs ok but could be better.

I didn't get a horse early in the game because I avoided the main quest and didn't venture beyond Imperial City much. Even when I finally got the horse, I was already spoiled by the portable hole. It's too dang convenient to give up.
