I never realized that hamsters were such filthy little creatures

First off, I've never owned or taken care of hamsters before. I've always had cats or dogs with the occasional bird and fish. Since my son is allergic to our cats (anyone want to adopt two?) my wife decided to get hamsters for him last weekend so he can have pets to take care of and play with.

I did the first cage cleaning with my son last night and blech!!! They had made a nest in this circular purple tube and when I opened it up it was filled with their poop and pee. I knew there was going to be a spot in the cage like this but I didn't expect it to be in the area where they made their nest. :/

and they are really pissy little buggers.

when i was younger, i picked one of them up to pet and play with, and the little bastard almost took my thumb off.

Yeah, the two we go have actually been pretty good in that regard. The only biting incident we've had so far was when my son was handfeeding Specks a treat. She accidently took a nip out of his finger when she was trying to bite the treat.

Our hamsters had babies but then they ate the babies. I remember making some lame explanation about it to the kids. The kids looked at us funny for a long time after that. Especially around meal time.

:Q  that sucks but it's kind of funny at the same time.

Yeah, they have big teeth. Don't pick them up at night. They are nocturnal, and you can handle them during the day because they are sleepy.

Depends on the hamster's temperment. Most male hamsters are quite docile and won't bite unless they're very scared, females have more of a tendency to bite. Personally I'll stick with my guinea pigs.

Wow...
if you feed pets, they produce waste products. Who'd have ever imagined that?! 😛 🙂

What sex are the hamsters? IIRC, females aren't as messy and don't smell as bad.
But, I can think of a whole lot of pets that are better than hamsters...

Male cats will often kill the runts of their litter too. That's not uncommon.

Humans in different parts of the world will kill girl infants. See, we're not so different after all.🙁

You should get quails. They are loyal, easy to take care of, and they don't even go to the bathroom that much.

and then you can cook them when you don't want them anymore!

😛 It wasn't so much that they produced waste products but the fact that they were going in the same area where they took all the nesting material we gave them and made their nest....you know, basically sleeping in their poop and pee. The rest of the cage was sparkling clean in comparison.

Both are female. My wife made sure they were the same sex so that we wouldn't end up with the baby problems.
