Some of those mis-quotes were fabricated.

...and I doubt people think they're quoting the novel when they say "Elementary, my dear Watson." It was clearly used in some movie or show and entered into pop culture.

Quoting in general tends not to be correct verbatim, and it's hardly surprising or interesting that we can point to examples..
