...until I went to the World CIA Factbook site. Afghanistan has a per capita GDP of $700 per year. :Q This means that the average person in Afghanistan makes $700 per year. That's only 100 hours of work at minimum wage here in the U.S. You have to wonder if they actually like living like that or if we should feel sorry for them. Linkage

you also have to realize the cost of living over there = very low as well. although i will admit, if they wanted to get a Dell 2001FP, they are pretty much screwed.

The federal minimum wage is only $5.15/hour, not including tax deductions. Only anti-business states like Washington have $7/hour plus minimum wage, and not surprisingly lead unemployment statistics as well.

Oh well, here in CA its $6.75. But back to the focus of the thread, Afghanistan's cost of living even if it is super low, $700 is peanuts.

LOL, leave to a geek :)

A true sign of how destitute a country is would be their infant mortality rate.

For Afghanistan it is:

Infant mortality rate:

total: 142.48 deaths/1,000 live births
female: 138.8 deaths/1,000 live births (2003 est.)
male: 145.99 deaths/1,000 live births

Now that is high. Its on the same page of the above linkage, just scroll up to the People section.

It's a putrid mess of a country, like most of the countries in that region of the world. In fact I'll go further and say that the majority of countries in the world are vile useless warts on the atlas. Bad economies, bad governments; it's not hard to find a country I'd never want to live in.

Yep. The only countries I would live in are:

America
Canada
Australia
New Zealand
UK
Ireland
Those in Western Europe
and Italy

So what you guys are saying is that there are other countries besides the USA. What for?

Seriously though, what an insanely lucky bastard I am to be born in this country.

I have had the priviledge of growing up in one of those insanely poor countries. Majority of the problems lie in work ethics and government red tape.

Yeah, its too bad countries in that region were not smart enough to cash in on slavery and imperialism.

The funniest thing I remember when the conflict with Afghanistan started was people saying we can't use the expression "bomb them back to the stone age" because essentially after the Taliban took over they were already there! What an ass backwards armpit of civilization.

Truth hurts? Why not make a coherent reply instead of just using a stupid icon? Most of the countries that Chaotic mentioned in his list (with the exception of Ireland and perhaps Italy) were nations that either took over another persons land or forced people to work.

I think that CPA rolled his eyes because your statement was biased, at best. I'm sure I don't need to tell you that Africa was enslaving its own people before anybody from the US even thought of the idea. There are plenty of pissant nations all over the world that have relied upon slavery, and they remain pissant.

In regards to your imperialism idea - you're right. These countries were not smart enough to engage in imperialism (effectively). At one point the sun never set on the British empire :D And look at all the offshoot nations from British imperialism? They happen to coincide quite nicely with Chaotic's list - a list I'll point out which contains some of the world's most desirable countries to live in.

It's not imperialism's fault that people from the US aren't immigrating to Mexico, or China, or any other great number of nations. CChaos is right - we're lucky to be born here, instead of some ass-backwards hellhole that has a corrupt government, poverty at every corner, and no human rights. And it's not my fault, or Canada's fault, or France's fault, that a public stoning is still punishment for certain crimes in the middle east, or that Africa is rife with AIDS.

Still bitter that the Moors got booted out of Europe, eh?
