I need your help with!

So, im nearly 20 in college up at Rochester, NY...

Right now I own a 2000 pontiac grand am, 50k miles on it

My sister just bought a car, and so because of the extra insurance my dad has decided to sell his mustang (aka his baby) which he bought in 1999 and to date it has 7k miles on it. I want to convince him to let me buy it off him and allow me to sell my car...

His points are that
#1 insurance will be higher for me
#2 the dangers of driving in rochester weather with rear wheel drive

I need to persuade him to sell it to me, so tonight I think i am going to make a power point presentation just to show him how much i really want his car.

So far, I have....
1) His car has lower mileage so it will last me longer
2) the Crash test ratings of his mustang are identical to my grand am in every category
3) This is the ultimate way for him to make his son happy 🙂

anyways if anyone can think of any points that i can add, they can be funny or stupid or whatever, my goal is to have him laughing at the end of it and to make him reconsider...

thanks!

eh you are in college. you already have a nice car. you do not need the newer more dangerous car. worry about getting fun crap you can afford after college.

anyway what college?

I don't quite get his reasons for selling the car, but OK.

Oh yeah, this Mustang... V6 Automatic convertible??

Mustangs aren't very good cars. I wouldn't want one while in college. Go read an edmunds book on their reliability for that year.

QFT.

I can't stress this enough. They're nothing but trouble. I'm not sure about the newer ones though.

My dad waited till he was 40 to get his fun car, and it sat in a garage for 7 years and now hes selling it. at least i'd use the damned thing!

Plus, i wouldnt ordinarily buy a new car so soon after i just purchased this one (3 yrs ago) however this opportunity is hard to pass up.....

I go to RIT for software engineering

Also, new reasons added:
Its safer than a motorcycle ( I was talkin to them about getting a bike a few weeks ago)
I'll be the coolest college student in the universe

Edmunds seems to have reviews on only new cars?

Hes selling it because if he kept it our insurance would have 5 cars for 4 drivers on it.... aka insurance would be too much to keep it. Plus, my sister is entering colelge soon so the money is needed

Its a V6 manual convertible

I don't remember which books. What I did AFTER college was went to the book store and read up on a lot of cars, including the Mustangs and I came to the conclusion that they were a really bad idea. I had friends in High School who had some '89 mustangs plus or minus a few years and although they were really fun when they were running, they were always having one problem or another. ESPECIALLY if you tinker with them. And who doesn't tinker with their Mustang....?

Hmm, two out of three isn't too bad!

Go to the JD Power ratings.

1-3 YEARS
Mechanical Reliability: 2/5
Body & Interior Reliability: 2/5
Feature and Accessory Reliability: 3/5

0-90 DAYS
Mechanical Quality: 2/5
Body & Interior Quality: 2/5
Feature and Accessory Quality: 3/5
Performance: 3/5
Creature Comforts: 3/5
Style: 4/5

Basically it's not that great. I have a Ford. I wouldn't get a Mustang. I think those ratings above (if I compare them to the way they rated my car) are a bit strict and should be taken as an anal interpretation, but still, the consensus is that the car isn't that great.

err you are going to RIT (went there myself!) so no you will not be the coolest college student in the universe..

Do you intend to "buy" this mustang off him, then tell him you need more money for "books"?

If so, this is a not so hot deal for him.

I guess you could swap cars and have him pocket the cash from selling your car. But really, IMO, you'd need to be a really good salesman to get a car for free from your dad when you already have one that works.

All this of course is moot if you are actually willing to pay full market value for the Mustang and you earn all your money. Because in this case, why would you have to need to convince him unless you wanted a family discount?

LOL
read your own review posts.. the ONLY 2 ratings sup par are interior and creature comforts...

thats consistant over the entire mustang run.. they arnt built for comfort they are built for speed..

also how many mustangs have you owned PERSONALLY?
me Ive owned 6 dating all the way back to 1979 all the way up to 1996..
and Im buying another this weekend..
all V8 cars all ran way over 300k miles... with minimal problems..

I'll take a stang over any jap car or any other american car on the market period..

Ive found the blue book value of my car and his car, and rated them each fairly, and found the difference in private party seller value to be $1600. So I am willing to sell my car, give him the cash for that, plus an additional $1600 to make up the difference.

Only that still leaves a slightly higher insurance rate, which we will have to talk about
