Samsung SD-616
Toshiba 16x
Lite On 16x

all i want is low noise, be able to read diff dvd regions/formats, mostly be using it for cartoon type movies, and good cd and cdrw speed read.

does it matter the atual speed playback on the dvd movie read? isee some are 1x, or 2x and 4x?? thanks for the help!

You could've replied to your old thread instead of starting a new.

If you encode(rip) DVD movies into mpeg4, then the faster the better. If you just want to watch the DVD movies, then even 1x is adequate. With that said, I recommend the Toshiba 16x as the best overall DVD-ROM, the only drawback is it's locked at 2-4x DVD movie playback/ripping. If DVD ripping is important to you, then you should try Pioneer or Lite-On.

I read somewhere that at DVD ripping the toshiba is locked at a slow speed, whereas the Lite-on allows you to rip at full 16X speed. I would go with the Lite-on cuz its cheaper too.

DVD Ripping is what you do when you want to make DIVX movies. It could be the same thing with audio ripping as well (ripping audio CDs to make MP3s).

I'd say you'll be much better off with the Toshiba. The only advantage LG has is faster DVD movie playback/rip. If you don't even understand the word rip, then you most likely will not even need it. The Toshiba is a tiny bit slower as a CD-ROM, but it's superior to the LG in CD-RW disk reading and CD audio extraction. The best thing going for Toshiba is their famed CloneCD compatiblity.

LXi:
i read on CDrLabs.com that the playback on movies is slow (for the toshiba), but does that really effect the quality of the actuall picture? i saw the LG in action at work with the same vid card i have, and it looked really good. Will the Toshiba look the same or better? thanks for the help

I've heard the opposite...that LG is great for audio ripping.
