I used to have a voodoo5 card but due to the cheapness of Geforce 3 cards I purchased one. I cant seem to play Counter Strike in OpenGL nor D3D mode :( Only thing it takes is software mode. How can i fix this? using official driver 28.32 on Win2K.

please specify what you mean by "can't play" ... is it crashing out of the game after loading? is it not evening loading the game? is it hanging while trying?... a bit more detail to your problem will aid in helping you solve it

Seems like you probably didn't remove all the registry strings from your old Voodoo 5. I think there is a software to do such tasks.

Definitely a driver installation issue.

1. uninstall your voodoo drivers COMPLETELY (lots of threads to help you know wtf that means)
2. don't use the auto-install for the detonator drivers (ie: don't double click the .exe file). Instead,
unzip the detonators to a directory and then install with the "have disk" funciton of Windows in device manager
3. don't install any of the other software for the video card that came with it. (some work fine, but many don't
when you use the reference (detonatorXP) drivers from Nvidia.

Hope this helps! CS should run great on a properly installed OS and GeForce3

I've spent countless hours on Counter-Strike with my Geforce 3. Never had a problem. Only played in OGL though so can't comment on D3D. Make sure motherboard drivers are up to date and that your display drivers for the Voodoo card have been properly removed.

sorry guys, I didn't check video forum :). All other games works fine except CS.

I were able to get into the server listing but after that all i see is the loading screen.

1). I'm using the latest driver for all hardwares.
2). Did install the Video driver using the exe file.
3). Other games ran fine on this card. Mohaa, Wolf, WCIII

Where can i locate such a file?

Its weird that everything else ran normal or better than my voodoo5 except CS :(. I dont need 4-in-1 driver since my mobo dont have a VIA chipset on it.

I dont wanna reinstall window :( its too time consuming

<all other games work fine> means you need to configure your video correctly in CS

You need to select OpenGL or Direct3D in the video modes section in the configuration screen and choose "default" drivers

If that doesn't work, re-install Half-life/CS

When I got rid of my voodoo card (3500), I couldn't use my nvidia cards either. Was using an ATI card forever until I just made a new system with a geforce 4 card.

I feel your pain. My geforce three was NOT responding at all, yet worked fine in every one else's comp eventually sold it for $100 after buying it for $300, and never used it.

bummer

What happened when you tried choosing Direct3D instead of OpenGL?

(I am assuming you have downloaded and installed directX 8.1)

Yes i have DirectX 8.1 <--- got that from mircosoft updates.
Direct3D is the same. :( When I open up halflife it had that gfx error saying something about not able to open *.bmp. Its driving me crazy with this Geforce3 card. Could it be that half-life is corrupted? I mean every other games plays perfectly well and 3dmark 2001 ran flawlessly. I'm not overclocking either :(

I can understand why this is driving you nutz!

Half-life is one of the less demanding games and it is the only one that won't run ?????

I don't really know what to suggest.

I think you have already tried, but.........

use hardware device manager and remove your display adapter
boot to safe mode
use regedit and look for (and remove) anything leftover from your voodoo installation
double, triple, and quadruple check your windows/system directory for any voodoo files that were not originally removed.
boot (normal)
install the detonator video drivers
boot
Uninstall Half-life
Delete (and empty recycle bin) EVERYTHING half-life
use regeit and search around for anything Sierra (be careful, only remove HL related items)
boot
turn off ALL extraneous applications (firewalls, antivirus, etc....)
ensure your System and video are not overclocked
install HL from an IDE CDROM and to an IDE hard drive (not scsi) if you can.
DON'T try to re-use your 'config.cfg' from the old (HL/voodoo) installation.

Ok, that's about as conservative as I know how to get..........

Good Luck!

I'll try it out tonite when i get home. But this is a new formatted HD so there should not be any voodoo files in there. I'll let you guys know what I find on my IDE drives. appreciate the help :)
