What would be the best upgrade path for me?

I just game on the computer.

How comparable is a Q9550 @ 4.0 and Core i7 @ 4.0 for gaming?

BTW, I'm thinking a 4890 would be the best bang for buck...

CPUs aren't too highly important for gaming. A cheap dual-core and a top-end quad-core will still score within a couple of fps when you actually game.

The 4870 technically is the best "bang for buck". However 4890 is still a very good value with all the deals going on. I'm happy with mine.

For FPS, spend your dough on the GPU, RTS, go with the CPU.

Obviously the i7 is faster, but you have to keep in mind you'll need to replace your mobo and RAM to upgrade to that newer socket.

If you're looking for bang for buck, just use the Q9550 and save the i7 overhaul for further down the road - when mobos drop below $200 and DDR3 gets cheap, cheap.

You give us very little information to arrive at what's the "best upgrade path" for you.
We need input like... Your upgrade budget

Plug in that variable for us and we'll compute what's the "best upgrade path" for YOU.
