I need to unplug and replug CAT5 to get connection

It appears my computer is unwilling to accept an IP from my router. The log shows my initial boot-up (Kurt-PC) and you can see that repeated attempts were made to give me an IP.

While the attempts were being made, I booted the wife's computer (Barb-PC) and she received an IP of 192.168.11.4. Mine finally did get happy, but only after I unplugged the CAT5 cable at the router. Then, 192.168.11.2 was assigned to my computer nearly instantaneously.

That's what I have to do, unplug and replug in the cable.

I see that there are requests after IP's were issued and accepted, why, I don't know.

Both running Vista. Mine is 64-bit. Both the Buffalo WHR-G125 and the O/B NIC in my computer are certified to work with Vista.

My aging Netgear developed a flaky port and after a brief fling with a Linksys, I've settled into the Buffalo. I had zero problems with the Netgear in this regard. The flaky port on the Netgear had our printer plugged into it.

What is the root cause of this? Why would unplug and plug fix it? My computer is obviously seen by the Router. I'm confused.

Edit: You know, sometimes putting it in writing is helpful to me. I've realized that although I don't have an internet connection, I can always get into the config screens of the router. I'm not sure exactly what that means. Is it the port itself?

Also, when I go to the Diagnostic > Client Monitor page, although a MAC Address is shown for every attached device, there is no Lease IP Addresses shown. Refreshing will not make them appear.

I should also add that everything is attached wired at this time and that the Router is functioning as a DHCP server.

I just switched ports. I'm going to reboot and see what I get. Cable will be next. I have what I need here right on the shelf ...... in my closet.

I switched ports and got an IP within 12 seconds of boot.

I can switch cables, what do you think? Right now, the printer is plugged into the port my computer was plugged into.

Looks like you already isolated it to a Bad Port on the Router.
Depending on it's age,it may be time to replace it.

Well, it's brand new, but I've decided it's bad out of the box.

After swapping ports and replacing cables, I can't get it to act consistently. There are other issues that have caused me to bail on it.

It won't successfully run the Internet Connection Wizard. I must set it up manually.

It won't consistently report information in the Client Monitor page.

I bought it brick and mortar and the box had clearly been opened. I inspected the contents and everything was there. When I initially installed it, I was unable to log in. I had to reset it. I'm thinkin' there was a password in place. I'd say it was a NFG return and they threw it back on the shelf. I know, I know, I was in denial on this at first. I need help, I admit it. 😱 Actually, I was hoping it was OK and a previous purchaser was just not capable of getting it working.

In trying to fix it, I flashed it but there was no newer firmware available. I could DD-WRT it!!!!! But, it sure sounds like a hardware problem. What do you think? Worth a try? I can go back right?

If I remember correctly, you can revert to the stock Buffalo firmware after flashing it with DD-WRT. Since you're using Windows, there's a .bat file that will flash the G125. http://dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/In...-G54.2C_WZR-HP-G54.2C_WZR-RS-G54_and_WHR-G125

I flashed iit through Linux and it was pretty easy actually. It ouldn't hurt to try DD-WRT, it's possible it's some weird software thing. Only thing it will cost you is time. 🙂
Hey, I can't thank you enough for that link. The step-by-step tutorial is great. I was overwhelmed when I first looked into DD-WRT just because there is so much information out there. Trying to determine what file and the procedure to use was mind-boggling. I've got to read through the whole thing and may give it a try tomorrow. Thanks again!

No problem, just follow the prompts and you'll be running dd-wrt in no time.
