I found another one!

This is a 1986 Toyota MR2, it has been sitting for about 4 years, Needs transmission, 4 tires(someone put a knife into them) and a battery. I had body work done on it about 6 years ago, all metal, NO BONDO. It runs but will need to jump start it with cables. This will have to be put on a trailer to be moved becuz of the tranny being messed up. For $250 this would be a great car for someone, with everything I do I just don't have the time to put into it. First person with CASH takes it.

1987 hardtop with 97k. Blown head gasket, new clutch, no transmission issues. "some bondo", minor rust.

He said he needs it gone today and will let it go cheap. I'm thinking $50 or $100...but I don't know if I want to tackle it. HMM.

I was about to see if I could rent a trailer tonight and he texted me saying someone was there with a trailer now. Ah well.

ooh..yes..

Anyone else participate in this? My buddies and I are seriously considering doing it, and I just wanted to talk to someone who has to get some idea on what it's like, etc. Pm me if so, thanks!

Be VERY careful looking at this car. I was researching it for my first car, a buddy owned the brand new 1992 at the time, and he strongly cautioned me against the 1987. The car is dangerous in slippery conditions. Changing the oil required a special tool available only from Toyota, cost was $700. The whole engine required special tools.

There is a guy here at work, in the Detroit area that drives a newer one year round, he swears by it, with the proper tires of course (not inflated to 79psi)

I had an '86 and now have a '91 turbo. My uncle and I did a head gasket and timing belt on the '86...I replaced the starter, plus regular tuneup stuff (plugs/wires/cap/rotor/coil/fuel filter). No special tools were needed for any of that, let alone an oil change.

I just found a '91 turbo with 103k, runs strong, with an extra engine and transmission..for $3200 (ad says 'motivated seller'). I'm going to check that out and see if there's anything wrong with it. If not, I should be able to flip it and make $2k.

The 'special' tool must have been some kind of oil filter wrench he got ripped off for, or the tools are common now. It might have even been that he couldn't find metric lol it was nearly 20 years ago.

Obviously you've already worked past the issues he had,

All you need is an ordinary wrench. SAE will do in a pinch. 😕

If the oil filter was overtightened, it can be difficult to get off..but you'll have that with any car. I destroyed the filter on my Tundra, trying to change the filter when a shop had done it last. Wayyyy too tight.
