I have a sebaceous cyst on the top of my head offset to the right side. It is not that noticeable but it screws up my haircuts. I want to have it removed. Reading a little about it, it seems that I can have it surgically removed, get steroid injected into it or try to take it off by using many heatpad applications.

Does anyone have any experiences with this? I think I am leaning towards the heatpad approach for now since it is not that big.

As for the surgery, I've heard scalp incisions hurt pretty badly. Plus I'd have a bald spot for a while and a permanent line that does not grow hair.

Steroid injection I know nothing about besides that I've had keloids grow back after steroid injections.

How do I approach this?

Regarding the pain, you get a few shots in the area and then the doc whips out the scalpel and goes to work. Apart from the anesthesia shots, you wont feel much.

I had a gash stitched up on the back of my head and it doesnt grow hair in the location of the scar.

You can try to apply heat to the cyst. You may have luck bringing the gunk inside to the surface where u can lance it.

One of these should do nicely. Drink a pint of whiskey and go to town....

2. Record the removal and post it on youtube.

What does lance mean?

My advice is to go to a dermatologist rather than a general practicioner. They see that stuff a lot and can probably take care of it pretty easily. You may have some infected hair follicles causing the problem that need to be plucked out of the cyst before it's drained....they'll be able to assess the situation and will know how to take care of it without ruining your hairline. Just make sure you go to a GOOD dermatologist. If you have insurance, it pays to see the best since you'll likely get the same copay no matter what.

My wife has had a few of these removed. % minutes and you're done. My problem is that this is considered a surgical procedure (like heart surgery????) and our BCBS copay is $150!

Sewing needle - heat it until it gets red hot - cool it down quickly with rubbing alcohol (this will sterilize the shit out of it) and just stick it in until you get that satisfying pop. Then just squeeze all the goodness out.

Does anyone else think this sounds sexual in some way?

How do you know it's a cyst?

Not the same, but I had 4 decent sized moles removed from my scalp back in March. One shot near each with the needle and she then used a sharp razor to slice each one off. None were cancerous and hair has grown back. Sure, for the first couple weeks it looks odd, but wear a hat when you can and ignore the rest of the time. Given the option to slice it off or cut it out and resew it back together, the first option was best.

I've had several cysts. A gangleon in my wrist was surgically removed and it never came back. This was done under general aneasthesia.

Most recently, I had a pilonidal cyst drained. This was at the base of my spine and was done with only lidocaine, and was the most painful thing I've ever had to endure. Had to be packed with 2 feet of iodoform gauze. Was a week of hell as it had to be repacked every day. The cyst has come back several times since that surgical procedure. It's gone away on its own each time, though.

Total removal of the cyst gives you the best chance of it never coming back. Heat and draining will not necessarily keep it away forever.

its a cyst, not a zit or a boil. there is no "popping".

my son was born with one on his eye brow. doctor wanted to wait until he was 7 before he removed it. general anesthesia/out patient procdure. after the operation he showed it to us in the little formaldehyde and the sucker was as big as a marble and just as hard.
