After cutting out a general shape, try using the polygonal lasso tool. It can be pretty accurate if you put the time in to it.

Don't use the magic wand. For this I did quick mask.

OK, I'll stop. I was almost done, but you got it good as well. When you want to pull stuff like this from an image, you want to do a mask. It's the easiest way, then you inverse it, copy it, and paste it to a transparant background.

Masking is great. The contrast between the hair and background basically isn't even there though, so it kinda gives some problems. I dunno if you have a graphics tablet or not, but masking is a cinch with one. Just paint the thing on. :p
