I need to reconstruct some scratched DVD data

A data DVD I burned is scratched right at the beginning (over the TOC I think). It says the disk is corrupt. I've found lots of free programs that claim to recover lost HDD data but do I need to buy something that will help me with my situtation?

Kind of wierd how it happened. I backed up some data with my NEC burner for the first time and didn't close the disk so I could add some later. When I tried to access the data, the NEC drive couldn't find anything on it. I think it was because I didn't finalize it but my Lite-On DVD-ROM read it fine so I used it, instead. The second time I tried to access the disk, it acted up, taking longer than it should. One try later it said the disk was damaged. I looked at it and there were short but wide scratches at the beginning and in the middle that follow the curve of the disk. I think the head of my drive scratched it! :| There was nothing extremely important on it, but it's irritating.

Go get a DiskDr. It goes a good job at removing scratches from the data side of a CD/DVD. I use mine all the time since my kids abuse their game disks. Unfortunately I know of nothing that can save a disk that is scratched on the label side.
