Since inkjets and lasers all assume a white background, do I have to go to a professional printer or is there some other way?

I'm all ears if anyone has good ideas :)

edit: apparently the title wasn't clear, but I need to print on a clear sticker which will then be placed over a black background. This means I can't just I can't just invert colors and print the black areas

Print the background (black), leave the white text empty and it'll show up as white on the screen. You can't print white (at least not with any inkjet you'd buy in a store).

That won't work, as stated in the title it's printed on a transparency (actually it's a clear sticker) going over a BLACK background.

if you get one of those label makers, they sell cartridges for them that do white on clear
some of them can even be plugged into your PC via USB and "printed" to or controlled somehow

check brothers web site for label makers

You could try getting white ink (if there is such) and filling up an old inkjet cartridge's black cart with it. Then, print your image like usual??

Sorry, didn't read the topic summary. How about this: http://www.quickstickers.com/

Specifically, this: http://quickstickers.com/designonline/

Edit: actually I did read the topic summary, it just wasn't clear.

It's not hard. Replace the old black cardridge with a white one, type the text in black, and print it on the transparant thingie.

Yeah, that's professional printing. I think this is what I'm going to end up with something along those lines.

uhhhh... have you ever seen a white ink cartridge? I haven't... inks are usually transparent, not opaque anyway.

print it as an extremely pale yellow :)
I tried that, it looks pretty crappy. Not something I can use unfortunately :(
