Earlier this year my friend gave me the game through steam because I loved the first.

Well It crashed like 3 times while patching...really ugly patch system I suppose.

Then it finally gave me a launcher...that asked for an account.

Uhhh...okay?

So I use it to try to make an account and click register.

Crash.

Uhhh....

Try again.

Crash.

Uhh....

Restart PC. Try Again.

Crash...

I just want to play. Why do I have to make an account in a single player game? Do your online DRM if you must, but making me sign up for an account?

Sigh...massive fail

new update:

so i got it working last night somehow. It just started to magically work lol. Then I left to spend time with my family for x-mas, and logged into steam because I also have a gaming pc that i leave there for when i go back :D

After installing the game...I get this

Unable to find Ubisoft Game Launcher, please reinstall AC2. Ubisoft Game Launcher: Error Code 2.

Ubisoft, are you starting to understand why people are so frustrated with your crappy DRM? Steam is complete DRM, but atleast it fucking WORKS.

On steam, do you need to register both with steam and Ubi? Or do they just let steam take over with their DRM?

Looks like both.

Gonna try a reinstall tonight and see what happens.

I have this feeling that if I was a pirate, I would have experienced none of this, and I'd have already been playing it :colbert:

Yep you need a UBI account. I ran into the same thing with Splinter Cell Conviction. I said screw that and downloaded a patched EXE. I bought the game on Steam and only intended to play the SP campaign. No way I was going to jump through those hoops to play SP.

There was a thread in here about console vs pc gaming. This issue you are describing is one of the major drawbacks and barriers for PC gaming. No more buying the game and playing. You must create all these accounts. And it appears a lot of these portals to create these accounts are functioning about half the time. Makes for a really frustrating experience.

Is it just Ubi or do you not play any other games from other publishers that require a login on their own services, like EA?

I just spent 24 hours downloading APB only to find you also need to sign up for a bullshit account, despite them saying you could log in with your Steam account.
Tied up my fucking internet all god damn day. Assholes.

The game is well worth it and is tied to your steam account. I'm not sure they've got all the "bugs" figured out with steam and accounts.

Try the steps here:

If anyone wants help with missions or what not, I'm a Criminal on Joker (NA East), same name as here.

APB is free so it makes sense they would milk you for anything cool. That seems to be the new model and is quite successful too.

Can you describe the game a little bit? Is it pay to win? Looks pretty interesting from screen shots.

The easiest comparison is to GTA, but only as far as driving around in vehicles, running over people, 3rd person, and completing missions. It's very watered down and I would actually say its just a big glorified pvp game based in urban environments.

In reality there are two sides Criminals and Enforcers that battle out in individual locations. There are two main locations each broken down into instances depending on how many people are online. Each instance handles about 100 people, generally divided 50/50 Criminal/Enforcer. You make money completing missions and if your'e a crim, stealing things. You can buy (and customize) vehicles and weapons and even clothing/etc for yourself.

The missions are varied enough that they are still interesting even after playing a week. There isn't much to do OTHER than missions as there isn't' much open world stuff to do. Stealing from storefronts is a open world activity, but if you're' spotted by an enforcer, you actually start a mission where the objective is to get the stuff to a drop off point.

The graphics are pretty cool and the balance is pretty good imo. It uses punkbuster to keep cheating to a minimum.

It's well worth free and even playable as such, albeit slower progressing.

edit: I did also peek around myself and tried to reinstall the game launcher, it just crashes for me LOL.

edit2: I'm about 1 hour away from just downloading a pirated copy. The hassle is just annoying

I was able to get it working yestreday; i had to remove all ubisoft registry references, and renistall, and it worked.

I played quite a bit...7-9 hours yesterday.

I wake up, I go back in...and all the sudden my save files are missing, and i'm at the same point that i started at yesterday (which was maybe 2 hours in?).

I looked around for where the save data is stored in the User folder, and it seems its indeed gone. It seems that when I quite, it didn't sync with the 'cloud' to save progress correctly, and re launching the game OVERWROTE my progress, despite being much much further along.

Can't even get your stupid cloud syncing working right...sigh, had I known better I would have turned it off.

So I'm done with this game, as well as with all future AC games because of UBISOFT so as long as it uses the same retarded system to authenticate and fuck up your saves.

Again - Steam WORKS. This...doesn't.

Wow, what a lot of anger in this thread.

Anyway, came in looking to see how the AC experience on the pc compares to that on the 360. Assuming you can get it working...

;)

I hate ubisoft for things like this. That's why I don't buy their games. Ubisoft DRM blows.
