I need to lose more weight....

I work out four days per week, lift, etc.

I'm currently at 220, and I was at 270. My main weakness for not getting below 200 (my main goal) is that I still eat like crap. I eat VERY LATE (after 9 pm) almost every night... and I think that's a main culprit.

Anyway, I'd like to bribe myself, and here's how I'd like to do it.

I'd like to lose at least a pound per week, over 20 weeks. My goal would be 200. For every week that I don't lose at least a pound, I will donate $20 to a random charity, to be decided each week. I regularly donate to charities, but avoiding that extra $20 out of my pocket that week would be somewhat of an inspiration.

In exchange, I would like ten people here to promise that, if I do lose the 20 pounds by May 1st, they will each donate $20 to a charity of their choice. Therefore, in the end of all this, charities get money anyway, and I'm inspired.

Is anyone up for a challenge?

Swim everyday for 2 hours a day. Best overall body workout, especially if you do it competativly.

Of course. I'll be 100% honest throughout this.

I have severe essential hypertension, but docs don't want to increase the meds because I've already lost 50 and only have 20 left.

Probably not, but I figured I'd ask. If anyone else can think of another way to inspire me to cut my diet, I'd love to hear it.

Drop the schemes and develop some will power. Losing weight is all about "lifestyle" change. You got fat because you were living wrong. If you don't make the changes necessary you won't lose all the weight and if you don't continue with the new lifestyle you will simply gain the weight back. Being fat is a choice. You obviously know you can lose weight so you simply have to make the CHOICE to do what it takes to lose all the weight and stay that way.

One of the best things you can do to cut calories to get rid of the sugary ice teas and sodas. You won't believe how much calories you can cut by ditching those and drinking water. Consume 250 or so calories less than you usually do each day, and do exercise burning 250 calories. That's a net loss of 500 calories/day.... 3500 calories/week.... which is roughly one pound.

Easy cut to 1800 calories a day.

Add in 4 days of cardio to go with the 4 days of lifting.

This is a very good point and one I tell most young people struggling with their weight. Young people tend to have a lot of drinks in a given day and most of them are the crappy soda/sugar type of drinks. When I was in college I noticed the same thing about myself and the fact that I had picked up about 10-15 pounds. With no other change then dropping the junk drinks and switching to home-brewed non sweetened iced tea I dropped that weight right back off in almost no time.

1. Drop the sugar drinks, as has been mentioned here.
2. Eat breakfast, oatmeal or grape nuts, something similar, to jump start your metabolism and give your body healthy fuel for the day.
3. Eat four to five small meals throughout the way including breakfast. I eat oatmeal or grapenuts for breakfast, an apple around 10AM, a half-size lunch, an apple or oatmeal around 2-3PM, dinner at 7 PM or so.

I've lost 25 lbs in the last four months by making only those changes.

I struggle with eating before bed, too, and I haven't made that change yet. I'm confident that once I do that I'll be doing pretty well with my eating habits. Then it's getting back into an aerobic routine that will be hard for me.

Be careful because of the BP issue, but here's my take (consult your physician, of course):

Lift with more intensity. 6 days a week. STRETCH FIRST! You want to work to full failure and not get hurt. There's two ends of the spectrum on this, and the guys I've seen make the least gains are the ones that lift like my roommate. They spend 90-120 mins at the gym doing like 8 sets on 8 exercises with medium to low intensity. The other end, which I've seen just as much of (and have done myself) is to do 4x4 on two muscle groups a day with high intensity (meaning to failure in each set). Monday Back and Shoulders, Tues Bi's and Tri's, Wed Chest and Legs, repeat next 3 days. Sunday off. Your goal is to build more muscle mass quickly to keep your metabolism high. Cardio too, afterwards, maybe 20 mins on an elliptical. Build up the resistance. Don't take it easy on this just because its last to do.

Diet properly. Good carbs only (fruits, vegetables, oatmeal for breakfast, whole grains). No soda, maybe even no caffeine. No fast food at all. Lean meats (chicken, some pork, beef with the word "top" in the cut like top sirloin, etc, FISH).

3 meals at regular times (breakfast, lunch, dinner), 3 snacks in between the meals and an hour or two before bed. Small snacks. Handful of almonds with a lot of water, some fruit, yogurt.

Lots of water all day.

Mindset. Think about your goals. Think about your next workout and how hard you'll push yourself. In between, practice relaxing. Sounds stupid, but hear me out. As you're trying to fall asleep, take note of the tension in your muscles, especially facial muscles. Consciously breath deep and relax. Do this throughout the day too. There's a lot of muscle tension that we just get used to. This helps me quite a bit. When you wake up in the morning, stretch, especially your legs. This helps with stress and the workouts to come.

I have no doubt you want this. That's first. I don't know how much of what I said you're already doing. PM me if you need a little more detail. I got myself in some BP trouble coming out of college, and weight loss was the key to bringing it down.

Those are really good changes, though. Those are the big lifestyle ones. Dragging yourself to the gym is 2nd.

Congrats, you definitely know what you're doing. Now get to lifting hard and see the results. That'll get your metabolism up 24x7. Try to avoid drinking as many 40's as I do :)
