I need to learn Portuguese

My son has been seeing a Brazilian girl for a long time and they have been engaged for a couple of years. They are finally going to tie the knot in October 2016. She has an MBA in English and speaks it very well. However, on her side of the family very few of them speak English. Because of that I would like to learn Portuguese, at least at a conversational level, so we can communicate.

What should I use to get a basic grasp of the language? Rosetta Stone seems to be the default choice. Are there other alternatives that are better?

Thanks.

Oh, and Oi!

Duolingo is pretty decent. The Portuguese on it is also Brazilian, so that will help you a bit too (helps you a bit with their pronunciations/accents)

The Pimsleur audio tapes are pretty good. I used to listen to the Portugese ones in the car but I stopped when I realized I was paying more attention to the tape than the road.

jajajaja = hahahaha

That's about all I know. Had some Brazilians that used to play on my game server. I had to use google translate all the time to talk to them. They were usually just asking for free items lol. Fun bunch of guys though.

Learn Spanish... then learn all the Portuguese words for Spanish words.

No falamos portuguès.

If all else fails, the Google Translate app for iPhone (and I'm sure for Droid too) works great (you speak into it, it types it up in Portuguese on the screen & then reads it back in Portuguese). My friends from Portugal were upset that it translated my English into Brazilian Portuguese instead of 'proper' Portuguese 😀

What are the numbers? Like 10 million Portugal people, 200 million Brazilians?

...Can say the same about Britain and America. 'Murica!
