I need to learn how to use linux for my xray crystalography..help

where do i download linux (I know its free), and i heard there are a few flavors of linux, what is the easiest one to learn, and how is it setup . i will be using it on Dual Proc or Quad Proc sytems.

any suggestions?

RedHat or SuSE may be your best bet, especially if you are using commercial software.

but this software only runs on linux, its a pretty sweet setup, teh machine is hooked up to a cluster of sgi systems(8 to be exaact) and then its sent to a server using winnt and we look and manipulate the results on the linux machine

Sounds pretty neat. Id personally go with RedHat because they will have support you can purchase (especially good for schools and companies). But any distribution should work, so if you get a chance play around with them a bit.
