All my life I've been a light sleeper. It always takes me a good length of time to fall asleep and the slightest amount of noise will quickly wake me up.

My GF will fall asleep within seconds (not kidding) and would probably sleep through WW3. I am absolutely jealous. For me, perfect conditions for sleep are: silence, absolute darkness, and a cold room. Obviously, those conditions aren't always possible.

I need to train myself to reach a deeper sleep, or to be less sensitive to noise, but how?

As hard as it is... and almost impossible with most schedules... if you always go to bed at the same time every night, and always wake up at the same time... eventually your body will know that at X:XX, it is time to sleep.

Cold room is one of the keys...

They say that room temp should be 58 or 59 degrees to fall into a "deep sleep" faster. It's one of the reasons we sleep so well in the winter...not to mention not wanting to get out of our warm beds. ;)

dude I was a sleep tech for 4 yrs, I spent most night treating people w/ all sorts of sleeping disorders.
if it is a problem talk to your GP and get a referral to a sleep specialist.

there are lots they can do.

in the meantime avoid all caffine!!!, no chocolate either, it can affect your body for many hours even if you have it in the AM.
do sleep in a dark quiet room, go to bed and get up at the same time 7 (seven) days a week.
no alcohol 4+ hours beore sleep .

Take some Valerian Root. It works wonders for me and gives me some pretty funky dreams.

exerscise! But not wussy exerscise either - stuff where yo arepushing yourself. I use to have trouble sleeping - like even in puerfet conditions I might hit the hay 3 HOURS later but that hasn't occured since I starte exerscing over two years ago. When I go to sleep now spending what I did I'm gone within 15 minutes on average...Its really nice
