well, i have an asus a7v (not kt133a), which i know supports ata/66. how can i "make it go" ata/100? cause i wanted to use my udma5 hdd...

also, one question about the 4-in-1 drivers: the only drivers i can install are the inf and agp vxd drivers. why the hell can't i see the atapi vendor support driver and pci irq miniport driver?

these seem like 2-in-1 drivers... :( :)

you'll need to put the hdd on the promise controller ide but install the promise drivers(if you haven't already done so) before moving the drive!

Ok first you need to pick up a PCI ATA-100 controller card (which one is up to you). Get it installed, get the drivers installed and then move your HD over to it.

Assuming you are using Win98 I have always found that all you need to install are the VIA AGP drivers. You will be using your controller cards IDE drivers anyway for your HD.

i'm using win me.

udma4 seems to be working. do you think it is worth changing to udma5? or is it too much work for too little results?

You won't see an incredible difference, no.

Which hard drive have you got?

well, i don't really know... i bought my box with it, so i don't have the documentation.

but when the bios is set to auto, it is recognized as udma5 during boot up. all i can say is that the device manager describes it as geneic ide disk type 47, whatever the hell it means...

If you have an A7V it has onboard ATA-100, check your manual, there are four IDE connectors on the motherboard, 2 of these are ATA-100, the other 2 are ATA-66. Connect your drive to the primary ATA-100 channel and install the drivers that came with your board.

correct me if i'm wrong, i just wanna be sure of it:

if my hdd is auto-recognized as udma5, it means i can connect it to the ata/100 connectors, right?

will everything else keep working fine? i don't want to mess everything up here...so the procedure is that simple: disconnect ata/66, connect ata/100, install drivers, done.

have i forgotten anything?

<< do i need a special connector or can i use the one in the ata-66 slot? >>

no, you can use the ata66 ide cable for connection to the promise ata 100 controller ide!

When you boot up, after the initial screen showing bios version, ide detection, etc, there is another screen showing Promise Ultra ATA-100 device detection, you should see that it detects your hard drive. If it does you are good to go on ATA-100.
