I have been lurking and reading about motherboards and this board is rated # 1 by Sharkey Extreme and other sites. It has built in Audio and very stable. I am not interested in overclocking, but I want the option for later. I am on a tight budget and have all the parts for a new machine except the "guts". My question is, is this board stable? I plan to use the onboard sound initially, but I have heard about problems with it locking up and buzzing??

I have 256 pc100 , hp 9110 cd writer and a 4.3 gb hdd and a 4mb agp. I currently have a dell dim 200mmx. It does fine, but lacks the horsepower to do the pictures and video I want to get into. I think I will get a quantun fireball as 30gb for 105.00 to go with this machine. Does anyone see stability problems with the motherboard/setup?? Especially the sound??

As long as you dont have a seperate sound card installed, you should be fine with the sound. This is a very stable board, I have one for myself and it is great. The onboard sound is not the greatest, so when you get $40 I'd suggest getting a SB Live Value

No trouble with sound here. Runs MP3's all day. That seems to be the common problem in these forums as far as this board and sound are concerned - MP3's and a high pitched noise followed by a lockup.

For reference, I disabled onboard sound in bios and also disabled legacy audio in bios. My sound card is in PCI slot 3 (3rd from AGP slot). I have Win2K ACPI controlling assignments and my SB Live X-Gamer shares irq 11 with many other devices with no conflict. I was careful about the order in which I installed drivers for the system (ie reinstalling directx before and after agp, vid card, and sound card drivers.

A notes of interest.

If you have Win2K the drivers and software bundled with the card are not for Win2K. Download them from creative labs website.

Good Luck!
