Well, I have decided to get a cell phone (College Station, Tx) I know we have cingular, sprint, and some other small providers but I have no idea what i want or how much I should pay. Also, how long does it take to get it set up and do I have to buy a phone? How much should I pay for one?

Well, would anyone like to show me the way of the cell please, I am kinda lost here.

I recently got the cheapest voicestream deal that came with a free motorola phone and only $20 activation fee. I get 75 "anytime" minutes and 500 weekend minutes per month for $20 a month. I think there might be better deals out there if you're going the budget route, but this one had the free phone.

You can get free cell phones from most companies, as long as you sign a contract. The only thing with most of those is, they're your most basic phones. This is the option I chose and I'm pretty happy with it. After I believe 1 year, I get $150 credit towards a new phone. I chose Cingular here in Dallas. Actually at the time it was Southwestern Bell, but they had some of the best coverage for this area. Nationwide their coverage is limited. Will you be doing any travelling? If so, you might want to consider Sprint. While their local coverage isn't as good, their overall nationwide coverage is probably one of the best.

If you really want a GOOD phone look to spend $199. That's going to get you a phone with most of the bells and whistles, vibrate, ability to download ring tones into it, play games, probably come with a handsfree kit and car charger, as well as a home charger. Of course getting a nicer phone, also generally means less time is needed to charge it because its battery life is better than the less expensive phones. I personally just didn't want to spend a lot on the phone so I went with the free one.

As far as how long? If you go to a store you could walk out with an activated phone if you wanted. I just called a rep over the phone, he overnighted me the phone, and the next day I was in business but it's really up to you. If you have the time to go shopping at a Cingular store or a Sprint PCS location (they're in all the radio shacks too) then I'd do that.

DAM-

I am in the same situation as you, but I have been shopping around for quite a while now. I've found the best plans for me are the $39.99 Sprint plan that you have found, and the $39.99 Voicestream plan. I personally liked the Voicestream plan because it gave you more on peak minutes.

I also live in Texas and have heard many mixed reactions to Sprint and VoiceStream.

Oh yea...I also think Voice Stream has cool phones too (Nokia's).

Hope this helps.

I'm a fellow Texan here in San Marcos and I've had VoiceStream for a year with no problems. The phone (Nokia 5190) was free and I have a ton of minutes for 39.99 a month. I'd definately recommend them. The only downside is that they're still expanding and consequentaly the don't have towers everywhere just yet. But, if you can stay confined to the digital service it's great! If you want something with a little more roaming ability I'd go AT&T. They've been in the business for years and have a solid system. I think you have to buy the phone though! The choice is yours, and yours alone! Good Luck!

I dunno about texas, but just got some phones from Sprint Store, Motorola Timeport 8767 and Sanyo 4500. Both were $99 - $25 instant credit - $25 credit in a month. 1yr contract on any plan.

Timeport comes with a data cable so you can use it as a modem for a PC or PDA w/ a serial port.

Probably better deals out there, but, that's one to look into.

They are supposed to be getting some new phones in this month so older models will probably drop in price some more.
