I need to gain some weight

I'm 22, 5'7" and weigh only 100lbs. That's really light. Having said that, I look skinny but people that know me don't consider me physically weak. I have a good stamina and can do everything as well as everyone else if not better.

The only problem is I look very skinny and I want to gain atleast another 20lbs. I've tried light work outs. I used to lift some weights. I can do about 50 pushups.

It may sound ridiculous but people say if I wasn't so skinny, I have a decent body. I have good biceps, chest and abs but I have very skinny legs and a weak lower back. Both my dad and mom were even thinner than I am. I do have a decent appetite, though probably less than someone weighing 150lbs. I did try a protein diet; but I probably wasn't very regular with it. I still drink 600ml + milk daily (I've tried more, but disturbs my digestive system).

Any ideas on what I should try? I don't mind if I put on a bit of fat; I practically have no fat on my body. Another problem is that I travel ALOT and the longest stretch I hope to be home in the next year is 10 weeks starting in about a month.

P.S I've never been fat since I was 5, and when I was 10 my parents got me tested and the doctors found nothing wrong with me. The dietitian gave them a few tips but they obviously didn't work too well.

Try lactose free milk if regular milk upsets your digestive system.
Eat lots of meat, chicken, turkey, tuna.
Snack throughout the day on calorie dense items like almonds and other nuts.
Make protein shakes.

And lastly, lift heavy and sleep a full 8 hours every night. See Stronglifts 5x5.

There are herbal treatments for accelerating appetite, if you know what I mean.

For all intensive purposes, IMO mosh pitting is the best work out possible. Check your local concert schedule for metal bands, and get your work out on.

Squats + Milk. GOMAD was made for people like you.

...Except he can't tolerate milk. Sometimes even lactaid milk doesn't do the trick. Really, anything higher in calories and fat will probably do the trick. Nuts, as someone suggested are a good option. So are vegetable oils.

Well it doesn't have to be milk, milk is just widely available and makes a nice acronym.

Jar of Peanut Butter A Day anyone? :D

Whoops, missed the bit in there about milk intolerance.

Olive oil, avocados, and nuts/nut butters all work well as mass gainers. Eggnog can also work as a calorific beverage. Overall, just eat a lot more. I wouldn't worry too much about eating squeaky clean.

At any rate, the OP's a prime candidate for linear progression a la Starting Strength or Stronglifts 5x5.

Are you male or female?

Gaining weight is pretty straightforward:

1. Eat a caloric surplus. Don't guess - track your food intake and exercise precisely on fitday.com or thedailyplate.com and make sure you eat more calories than you burn. Depending on how fast you want to gain weight, maintain a surplus of 500-2000 calories per day. Use GOMAD if you can. Build up to it gradually. A caloric surplus is the only way to get your body to gain weight.

2. Lift heavy. Starting Strength or Stronglifts 5x5 are great choices for beginners. Lifting heavy things is how you get your body to make most of the weight gain muscle.

Find things that are calorie dense that you enjoy eating and eat them often. Peanut butter, nuts, milk, etc. 4Tbsp of peanut butter alone is 380 calories. Have some at breakfast and some before you go to bed. The most important thing is being consistent. I've seen way too many skinny guys attempt to gain weight, only to eat big for a few days straight and revert back to their old eating habits.

Also, definitely start a weight lifting routine. I recommend Starting Strength or at least something similar to it. Get stronger on squats, deadlifts, bench, OH Press, rows, pull-ups and you should be able to gain a decent amount of muscle mass as a beginner.

I had made it to 108lbs once but then I fell ill and lost it all :( So I need new motivation. Also need some recommendations on what I can do when I'm out of town without access to gyms and weights? Maybe I can get weights but gym would be difficult.

You think you have good biceps and chest but it's only due to being so skinny. Think about gaining 30-40lbs not 20lbs. My dog weighs more than you.

My post-workout meal today...

168g spaghetti
3tbsp olive oil
391g shrimp
174g broccoli
1 ice cream sandwich

Totals - 1578 kcals, 56g fat, 156g carbs, 106g protein
Totals for the day - 3848 kcals, 103g fat, 441g carbs, 218g protein

Obviously at your weight, you're not going to need close to 4000kcals in a day (I would start with even only 2000 and see where that gets you), but just to give you an idea of how somebody might eat to gain weight.

Also need some recommendations on what I can do when I'm out of town without access to gyms and weights? Maybe I can get weights but gym would be difficult.

How long are you usually away and how often?

You just need to eat and lift! I gained 20 lbs in three weeks this summer. Have had to take a break due to injuries but will start bulking again in the fall. Eat 4K+ calories and lift as heavy as you can and you'll see results pretty quickly.

Very unpredictable. I'm just out of college so it's going to get worse. I need some things I can do on my own without any equipment. I'm usually away for 2-3 weeks every second month.

push ups r good...you said you can do 50, so try 1 arm push ups or maybe try handstand push ups against a wall. pull ups and chin ups are also good. put a 20 pound dumbbell or some heavy books in a backpack while doing chins, that should help. try 1 arm chins, those are very hard. i would say to add weight to your push ups, but with your weak lower back it would be safer to just use 1 arm. 1 legged squats are good. lunges...there's lots of stuff you can do that would require little or no equipment. if it's too easy, just grab something fairly heavy to add some weight to the exercise. since you don't weigh a lot it shouldn't take much.
