I don't want just the .5mb file.... I want ALL the files.

I have a friend that has dail-up and would like to burn it for him.

I remember finding this a long time ago....but can't find it now.

Thx 🙂

amazingly easy.

go to microsofts site, get to the IE6 d/l page, start the process, *click* the 'download full for install later button'.

damn that was hard.
amazing huh ? 😛

and... its only like 10.2 meg minimum. tell ur friend to stop being lazy.

<< *click* the 'download full for install later button'. >>

I guess that would be easy.... if it was there.

IE6 site

Why would you see this option and I would not ?

The ONLY d/l I see is the 497kb one.

Any more ideas ?

HardwareAddicted, what night was saying is that you first have to download the .5 meg "installer" file and run it. Then in there, there's an option to "download only", just as night had said. Give it a try.

I'm sorry guys.....but I tried that.

It tells me that I have the latest version and quits the install.

I never see any option to "download only".... I just tried again just to be sure...

All I get is the "accept agreement" and it says it cannot continue as I have the latest one.

Maybe this might work on a system that has 5.5 on it..... I don't know.

I thank you for trying to help....but this is getting frustrating.

ok, not trying to be rude, but step by step (so theres no loss in communication)

-microsoft.com
-downloads link on top
-#1 Internet Explorer 6
-GO button on the right
-download button on the right
-click Open
-choose Install minimum/custom
-select full in the drop down
-click advanced
-check the download only
-pick a dir to put it in (give it it's own cuz theres quite a few files)
-hit next, and off you go

night,

You're not being rude. However, HardwareAddicted is saying the Net installer isn't working out that way.

I've had the same problem with the IE 5.5sp2 installer. After starting the installer, it automatically enters the download/installation phase (the only prompt is for download location).

I know there is a custom "Download Only" option, but as you can see, it isn't always available. Mickeysoft really makes things difficult sometimes. :/

I feel your pain....no offence taken.
And I will try to be just as clear.

-microsoft.com
-downloads link on top
-#1 Internet Explorer 6
-GO button on the right
-download button on the right
-click Open

No problem until I get here...

-choose Install minimum/custom not there, just the option to click "next", this is where it tells me that I have the latest one and quits the install
-select full in the drop down
-click advanced
-check the download only
-pick a dir to put it in (give it it's own cuz theres quite a few files)
-hit next, and off you go

So I can only assume that there must be a setting in IE, or something, that is going to check my config automaticly.....
If and when I find this, I am sure I will see what you see when you do this.

If anyone knows where this might be, I think this is the problem.

This is no longer me trying to help my friend, but me wanting know how to do this.

I thank you for your patience night...
And manly for backing me up. 🙂

But I am not crazy...

I am look forward to any further input from all/any of you.

This was a command I copied before when I needed it. It worked then but I can't guarantee it now. Anyways here goes:

First off, you need to download the installer file. It's called ie6setup.exe. Save it to a folder on your C: Drive called ie6 (make a new one, whatever). Then type the follow command exactly as it is here, cut and paste if needed.

"c:\ie6\ie6setup.exe" /c:"ie6wzd.exe /d /s:""#E"

That will save all the *.cab files to your c:\ie6 directory. Click on the ie6setup.exe inside that directory to do the install.

If you save to a different folder (say c:\diff), change ONLY the "ie6" part. It would be:

"c:\diff\ie6setup.exe" /c:"ie6wzd.exe /d /s:""#E"

*edit* you DO need the quotation marks. Put it in exactly like that.

theres no 'install now' or 'install minimum/custom' ? thats wierd.
maybe its cuz i upgraded to 6 from 5 (98SE) if you have ME or XP with 6 already. i dunno then.

i could up them to you but my u/l is only like 13k. its really annoying. i need to complain about that.

anyway, if u just want the minimum at 10 meg and are in a patient mood i could help u there.
if Nosfuratu's command switch wont work.

Check your PM

For those who also want to know. here is the instructions

Here is how you need to do it

Go to your C: drive and create a folder called ie6
go to microsft and dowload the installer file into c:\ie6 folder

copy and paste the command exactly.
go to the run command and execute.

the rest is self explanatory

Nosferatus' instructions are correct. I did this about 7 months ago and it worked perfect. A bit of a PITA but it works. No thanks to good old M$.

For a company that forces an integrated browser down everyone's throat, you'd think they would have a full version available to download without all the BS.

Would this also work for IE 5.5 (assuming I change ie6 in the below command for ie55)? We need to do a mass update at work over SMS from 5 to 5.5 (we're not going 6.0 yet) and this would be great. 🙂

I tested it out yesterday, and yes the IE 5.5sp2 installer also supports the /d flag for downloading. Too bad these command-line args are not documented anywhere convenient.

Also, even with this important information, the procedure still seemed flawed to me. I downloaded IE 5.5sp2 for W2K. It's only about 9 MB, and you simply have no options on which components to download (so I assume this is a base browser install).

But more importantly, after it was done, the download directory did not contain any .exe files so it was pretty unclear what the actual installation method is. My best guess is you stick the ie5setup.exe file in the same directory, and run that on any given machine to install.

Like I said, Mickeysoft makes it really stupid and inconvenient for users sometimes.
