Hello all,

If you all don't know, I recently lost a lot of weight (around 50 lbs). I need new clothes now and I need a new suit.

I live in NYC, so there's no shortage of places to buy clothes.

Problem is, there's no shortage of places to buy clothes!

I was walking around in SoHo today and checked out Zara and Club Monaco. Zara has some really nice suits (around $300). I'd rather NOT spend that much for a suit, but I suppose I need at least one REALLY nice suit, eh?

Where else in the city can I go for good suits? Men's Warehouse? Armani? Again, I'd rather not spend an arm and a leg for a suit. I'll spend about $300 MAX for a suit.

New York City and a $300 price ceiling definitely limits your options. Stay away from Armani, that's more of a store for people that don't flinch at $300 for a tie. Ditto for Barney's, great clothes, but prices for the Wall Street crowd. The Mens Warehouse is probably your best bet for finding a good suit in your price range. Or take a look at a major department store like Macys. They'll probably carry some major labels and will often have good sales.

Armani?!?! Are you crazy?!?

Anyways (;)), I'd try going out to the NJ suburbs, go into a mall and look around. Men?s Warehouse is going to run at least $200 - $250, and it might not even be good quality. Check out places like Filenes Basement, JC Penny's, or even Sears for Christ?s sake. If you need a suit that cheap, it really doesn?t matter where you go, since it want be one you'll be getting married in.

There used to be a lot of places on 5th Ave between 14th & 25th where you could buy a nice suit for $50.
This was when I worked in Manhatten in 1968.

Men's Warehouse. It's not cheap, but you'll get a lot for your money.

Men's Warehouse blows dogs. Their suits are the worst. On top of that, their sales people are pushy.

You cannot buy a "nice" suit for $300. The price of "nice" suits begins at about $600 and then you gotta drop another $150 for a nice shirt and tie to go with it.
You could get a decent one at a department store (like Macy's I suppose) for around that price though. See what they have on sale, that kind of thing. Explain to the salesperson your needs and budget and see what they can do.

Be warned: while nothing looks better that a good suit, nothing looks worse than a bad suit.

I agree with you about suits. I disagree with you about shirts. You can get nice shirts alot cheaper than $150.
You might wanna checkout places like Franklin mills outlets in Philadelphia. Off Fifth (Sax Outlet), Nordstrom Rack, Neiman Marcus Last Call, etc. Major name brands at deep discounts, though more than $300...... I gotta wear dress clothing all day, thats where I buy most of my stuff.

Yep, department store outlets are the way to go.
You can also wait until one of them has a sale, or find someone who's on their mailing list.
My mom often gets 20%+ off coupons from Macy's around the same time they have a sale.. So she routinely buys things at 50% off or more.

That being said, I bought an Alfani (Macys store brand) suit for a bargain price. Personally I like my Claiborne suits the best.

I got a place for you to find quality Italian thread at very decent prices ($200-$4000, big range) in NYC. It's called Garage Clothing, Ave S and Stillwell Ave. in Brooklyn.

I said "$150 for a nice shirt and tie." :D
I have to wear dress clothing as well, and I usually buy my suits at Nordstroms. Their salespeople tend to be very knowledgeable and have good taste.

And do not wear a pair of $50 shoes with that $600 suit.

No problem if you get a $300 suit tho. :)

Congrats on losing the weight!

What about Century 21 down by the place that used to be the WTC? They reopened and had great deals on suits. I hate using the term "Ground Zero" BTW.

Go to Century 21 right across the street from where the WTC used to be.

They have great sales and I suspect in August when all the summer stuff is taken off the shelves, you'll finds some great deals.

It is like the Filene's Basement of NYC. Plus, they have cheap socks, underwear, shoes, etc.

Check it out.

Also, the Secaucus Outlet Center is a good place to look too if you have a car.

Edit: Beat by 2 mins. Darn.
