I need to buy a new pc (suggestions wanted)

Ok here is the deal my pc died and I have already buried it. Actually I sold off the remaining parts.
I have been away from the computer world for a while after changing jobs last year, (I was a tech)
I am now doing a lot of modeling in 3ds max, and I would like to play some games like the new max Payne 2 that?s getting ready to be released.
I have always used g force video cards and amd CPU. But I am hearing good things about ati now. And as for Intel I do like my p4 laptop. So I am completely open to new ideas
Here is what I am currently considering buying from tiger direct. I am also open to a better place to buy.
Thanks any input would be deeply appreciated.

Ps my budget is $1,000.00 to $1,500.00

Video-------PNY Verto GeForceFX 5600 Ultra 128MB-----$199.00
Hd------Seagate Barracuda----------------------------------$89.99
Cpu---AMD Athlon 64 3200+-------------------------------$459.99
Mb-------Asus - K8V Deluxe---------------------------------$159.99
Dvd+and ?r----Optorite Dual Format---------------------$149.99
Ram----#2 (1 gig) Ultra 512MB PC3200 DDR 400MHz-$74.99
Total of $1,009.94
If I posted this in the wrong forum please forgive me, I thought it fit best here.
Thanks again

One more question if I could.
What about cases I need a mid tower case. I would like it to be strong and silent as possible.

You are going to get alot of different answers here so I will tell you what I would do (and did).

You should look at the P4C 2.4C for ~$160 and OC it to 3gig easy.
Look at the Abit IC7 Max 3 for a MB

Then with the money you save you can upgradein a few months when all the new options that are coming out like PCI Express etc.

Not too many people will recommend that video card so for $50 less you can get a better performing ATI 9600Pro.

You will like the Hyperthreading technology and since you are using 3ds max you will see better performace with the P4C's.

Thanks I will defiantly consider this. I love to over clock. I go back to the first Celeron over clocking where you had to cut the chip. Lol
The P4C what bus speed it that?
And what is PCI Express?
The ATI 9600Pro is it a lot slower than the 9800? I know the 9800 is higher but I might be able to swing it.
Also what about the name brands of the ati cards any suggestions?

Orion's suggestion is solid and with the difference in cost between the 3200+ and 2.4c you can add a 100$ and get the 9800pro, afford to spend more on higher quality ram, and get a better DVD burner than the Optorite. Also, shop Newegg and Zipzoomfly.com as the prices and service are superior to Tiger IMO.

get a radeon 9800 non pro...you can flash it to a 9800 pro and it will be $100 or so cheaper. brands don't matter much, i bought oem which is just the card and power cable. i flashed it and its now a 9800 pro and clocked at 410/365(9800 pro speed is 370/340)

Wow I am very great full to all for the help.
Ok I think I may go with the over clocking idea.
What about the fan do I need a special fan?

And thanks Cooljt1 for the tip on the 9800 pro. How much ram on the 9800 did you get?
Thanks guys this is some great information.

No need for a special fan if you get the Retail CPU. The stock one is more than enough to get above 3gig. I have 3 of the 2.4C's and 2 are @275FSB (or 1100mhz quad pumped) and one is @300fsb (this one is MB limited). The 2 @ 275 are on an Abit IC7-G and a Abit IS7.

As far as the 9800Pro there is no need to get the 256meg version. The 128 is more than enough.

Look at the OCZ ram it is performing very good on these boards. When looking they have 3 versions so only look for the EL or the Gold. I am using the PC3700 Gold on one machine @ the 1:1 or sysnc and the PC3500EL on another with the 5:4 ratio or asysnc.

No, no, no...there is absolutely NO reason to be wasting your money on nVidia right now. Stick with AMD. A 9500/9600 pro will be more than enough for a years worth of gaming. Otherwise, looks like a kickass system.

One thing....people are going to jump in and talk smack about how you should get a 2500 or whatever and overclock. If this computer will be used for your work (it sounds like it) then buy the fastest parts your budget will allow and forget about overclocking. And with a $1500 budget, I'd probably go with Intel over Athlon 64...you'll get more for your money. A64 is new and you're paying 2x as much just because of that.

Thanks for all the information guys

Chocoruacal thanks for your input and it will be used for my job.
Are the over clocked CPU stable?

Below is my new thought. I am thinking about over clocking the p4 to 3 gigs.or should I stay amd?
I still need a case, and I really would like to cut the cost some.
What about the dvdr anyone know a good 4x DVD burn that will burn the cheap dvdrs?
Should I cut the video to the 9600? Is there a big difference between the 9600 and the 9800?

Alternatively to the P4 2.4C, you can get an Athlon XP 2500+ for around $90, and it'll do that 3200+ as well as that $459 one (same multiplier, both can run 200 bus).

If you're getting a Maxtor 120, go local. You can frequently get one for $60 after coupon and rebate @ ODepot. If Seagate, I've seen 120's for $80 or 160's for $100 locally (bestbuy and compusa).

the AMD 2500+ will OC to 3200+ .. save nearly 400 BUCKS.
get the ATI Radeon 9600 Pro or 9800 NP with the money saved
NEC 1300A +- R/RW is awesome drive, about 20 bucks cheaper

He's considering the Athlon 64, Ionizer86. Different beastie 😀

I would suggest getting yourself a really fine UPS such as an APC SmartUPS 750XL, if you don't have something of that caliber already. The last thing you need is to lose your project to a power failure.

As for overclocking a work system... well, I have the ingredients for a nice 2500+ --> 3200+ OC myself, but I would consider that taboo because it's a work system. Having done some render/animation sessions that run more than 24 hours on a dual-P3 system, I wouldn't want to knock three or four hours off of my render time, only to have it crash near the end. But that's your call, or your employer's call. 😉

IMO, for the requirements you have, I'd go for a P4 2.4C for ~$170. You don't need to overclock. If you find performance dragging in a year or so, consider it then but this system ought to do you good for a while without monkeying with O/C'ing. As for mobo, I'd think the Asus P4P800 Deluxe for ~ $130 would be a good choice. I'd go back to the Seagate HD (i think Maxtor is the sux0r) for ~$100. For Video card, the price diff between the ATI 9600 Pro and 9800 Pro probably isn't worth it for you. Btw, the price for Ram you listed is way off @$27. Two sticks of Kingmax PC3500 512Mb is ~ $180. Choosing a case can be the most personal one of all. Narrow your choices by just looking at an Antec case. You might want to go for the SX1040BII model for ~ $110 shipped. Antec cases and powersupplies are top notch. Take a look at my picks here. This stuff rings up to around $900, and then you need to add your optical drives.
P4 2.4C
Asus P4P800 mobo
Seagate HD
ATI 9600 PRO
PC3500 Ram
Antec Cases

I would spend $50 more and get a Radeon 9800NP from mwave or any other store that carries them. Most or ALL of them will run 9800 PRO speeds fine.

This is a great thread! Im looking into buidling another system and I have a lot of ideas. Im thinking about going with AMD.. Probably the Barton 2500 way. Do you guys have any Mobos's that work great with this chip? Also, what type of ram would be good to OC this thing to 3200 like some of you guys are saying. Is the SATA HD's worth it? or is a WD 8mb cache good enough.

There ought to be lots of threads on the 2500+ and mobos in this (General Hardware) and in Motherboards forums. Do a little searching. But here's a good review of some different nForce2 Mobos. Guess it comes to preference on which manufacturer you like/trust, what features you want, and how much $ you have to spend. As for RAM for OC, check out Anantech's reviews of Memory (see the top tab on the homepage) for memory choices. As for SATA, if you're getting a new mobo & hd, then yeah it's probably worth a few more bucks and get a SATA HD. You can get the WD 8MB cache w/SATA and be the speed king! WD SATA linky!

I wanted to update this post
This is what I have narrowed it down to. I already have a Logitech MX700 Cordless Optical Mouse which I love. I already have a new Samsung sysncmaster 17 flat panel.
I am still considering an amd 64 3200+ I will build it on paper and research some more before committing.

From this list below I am not happy with the case; I can not find one I like. I do know I want an Aluminum case.
And I know nothing on ram I hope this ram is what was suggested to me and that it will over clock.

Any last suggestions? And I will post the amd components I am considering. Thanks guys your help has gotten me this far.
Thanks again.

You need at least PC3200, PC2700 won't cut it. And PC3700 if you want to overclock that 2.4 very far.

Thanks guys I just noticed I added the wrong ram. This ram and case situation is tough. It is now know as the ram quest. lol

Here are my final 2 choices. Remember it will be used for 3d studio max and photo shop 7 for work. I work from home running a graphics business and a large reptile related site (www.herptrader.com shameless plug) I also create models for a program called poser.
Opinions and suggestions welcome please.
Thanks
