I need to buy a DVD burner.....

Seriously, this is getting out of hand.

I swore two my drives failed last week and I had lsot about 500GB worth of video, and suddenly they are working fine😕

S.M.A.R.T. says they are fine too😕

I had my work data drive fail last weekend, right as I was going to burn a backup DVD. Sadly it did not come back to life 🙁

Luckily I only lost one day's work, and thanks to newegg I've now replaced the drive with a pair in a RAID-1 array. I hate doing the same work over :|

So yes you need to think about backups, because your drives will die eventually.

Which brands/models are you considering?

I couldn't decide between the Pioneer DVR-109 and NEC ND-3540A, so I bought both 😛

🙂 everything I read in General Hardware and on CDFreaks.com says NEC and BenQ are better than Pioneer right now.

My 4x Pioneer 106 is still humming along though, so I have no excuse to replace it yet.

Goosemaster, your best bet is to purchase an external HD to backup your info IMO 🙂

LOFL....I am using two right now.

Two 250s...and there is another external 250 upstairs😱

Hence the WPA and SPI and the MASSIVe firewall rule set on the routers..yeah...routers....

can't wait to hook up the cisco as the gateway in a few weeks😀

I tend to research the hell out of a product before buying it. Of course by the time I'm done reading 900 hardware threads and 100 reviews, the product has been discontinued and the cruel cycle repeats itself.

My NEC and Pioneer are still in the boxes, unused and unloved.

You might want to spend the extra $10 for the version with Nero, unless you already have a full (non-OEM/drive locked) version of 6 or 7.

<---full 6 and plan to upgrade to seven

🙁 the humanity!

I wasn't using mine much. just backups of work data. but I finally installed my Hauppage and transferred a few my laseridscs to DVD. Now that that's done I can go back to burning roughly 1 disc a month.

For my music server (300 GB of lossless FLAC files) I just use a second pair of 250 GB hard drives instead of burning 75+ DVDs, because I'm lazy 🙂

Backup your stuff to a separate drive. For a lot of reasons I prefer to not use a RAID array. The most effective thing you can do is to just remember to back up your important files to a separate drive. I have a lot of unimportant files on all of my hard drives, so a RAID array just wouldn't work out so well (as I'd lose a bunch of important disk space backing up the unimportant files, too).

Buy an external or buy an internal, whatever is your preference. I prefer internal drives myself.

Not at all Goosemaster, I purchased V6 of Nero and as a benefit, was given the opportunity to D/L V7 directly, but bypass the "major" review sites praising V7, "do the research." 🙂

PVR-150 retail, worked well to transfer the real version of the original Star Wars (Han Solo fired first!) and a few others not on DVD like Cemetery Man and Blue Sonnet.

I'll probably just sell it soon though, since I'm planning to get the Comcast HD DVR instead of building a home theater PC. Once I talk myself into buying the Samsung 50" 1080 DLP 🙂
