I can pick up a GBA for $25 and I'm wonderin' if it's work it (I'd rather not pay for it and games, but lose interest in 6 months 'cause all the games suck or something). What are the "must haves" for the GBA, how much do games usually run, and how quickly does it chew thru batteries?

good games:

Castlevania- $20
Mario Kart- $30
Mario World 2- $27
Sonic- $30
Golden Sun- $30
Tactics Ogre- $30
Breath of Fire 2- $30 - $40

there are more, those are my favs. New games normally run at $40, but they come down real fast. Mario 2 is on sale at BB i think, it was $40 just a week ago. Most of them end up at $20 after 4-5 months. Batteries last quite awhile, anywhere between 16-18 hours according to EGM. I use rechargeable, they last about 12-14 and i don't have to buy new ones when i'm done.

if you can get one for $25 jump on it, I think it was worth my $70 and then some.

Games are mostly between $30-40. I bought Mario Kart. Battery life is pretty good, but that's only because Nintendo didn't add the backlight in so you can't play in the dark unless you buy an external light or fork a lot of cash for a build-it-yourself backlight kit. I use NiMH so I get a lot of playtime before recharging. But for $25, that's a good deal. But I got mine for $3 :)

Check www.amazon.com for games and user reviews.

Don't forget the new frontlight mod that's going around called the Afterburner. You can buy the kit yourself and install, or check out portablemonopoly.net and have them install it for you. OR, you can buy a GBA w/ the light pre-installed.

you can always get that cartrige like thing... it's like a rom, or a flash rom or flash memory which can hold up to 2-3 games or something like that.

you can try out the games before you buy them. :)

Cool, I think I'm gonna pick one up tomorrow then (Just in time for a 12hr car trip.) Where is the best B&M place to pick up the external light? And does it use it's on PS, or run off the GBA's batteries?

Thanx,

I can't believe Advanced Wars isn't on your list. I've had that game since I bought my GBA, and I still play it all the time. GREAT GAME.

As far as future games... you've got Nintendo releasing Metroid, Star Fox, and Zelda (with 4 player action) Sometime this Fall. Lots to look forward to.

Also check out This article.

Can you say any NES game on the GBA!!!!!

Well, the light I was talking about is a modification you do to your GBA. It's only available online. An external light (worm light, shield, etc) is available where you buy your GBA (Best Buy, Kmart, Circuit City, etc).

For the external light, I'd recommend the Flood Light from Gamester. From my experience, it's the next best thing to the Afterburner. It runs off its own batteries too.

At least for now I'm gonna pass on the mod. When I get more free time I might decide to tinker around and open'er up.

great price.. i'd grab it..

for $100 you can get a 64 meg card and linker.. this is where i got mine from.. reliable place..

i don't condone it but it's a great way to try out games before buying them.. but the coolest thing is putting NES games with an emulator on it.. you can stack like 30 games onto one cart at once, it's great.
