Maetryx here,

I'd like to find the numeric IP address of this server: dbcwns02.epa.gov

My ISP does not seem to be able to resolve the address, thus I cannot even ping the server to see if it is up. Does anyone know how to get an IP from the epa.gov domain name servers or some other technique? Thanks.

Here's the trick:

Go into nslookup (without a command-line argument)

enter:

>set q=any (Tells it to respond back with all information)
>server ORION.RTPNC.EPA.GOV (From the WHOIS page on epa.gov.)
>dbcwns02.epa.gov

The key is to find the primary DNS server for the domain, then use the SERVER command within nslookup to direct it's searches to that server instead of the default DNS server. Very handy.

Maetryx here,

Thanks for the replies. The situation is screwy. I'm involved in a project called the Clean Water Needs Survey, and I'm supposed to be able to generate reports from a remote database on that computer (dbcwns02.epa.gov). The CD sent to us by the EPA has all 4 separate programs on it that are supposed to allow secure database access from our workstations.

-SecureRemote
-CWNS Client Manager
-CWNS
-IQ Objects (built on Oracle 7.3)

Anyway, when trying to use the Oracle based program, or following alternate instructions for using Microsoft Access 97, I get an error indicating "TNS: could not resolve service". From stuff I read on the Oracle support pages, I started thinking that the dbcwns02.epa.gov server name was unresolved. That's when I found out that my local DNS couldn't resolve the domain, and thus my post here. I'll be calling EPA tomorrow. They get off work at 1:00PM my time (Alaska).

Well, I telnet'ed into the University of Alaska (from work where everything is Windows) and used it's nslookup to try and produce an IP address with no luck. Thanks a bunch of the informative replies. I really liked nslookup. Learned something new and cool today.
