I need system build advice

Please help me scope out a system dedicated to running Autocad. My budget is $2500 for hardware. I have a slight preference for AMD but I am not religious about it.

For CAD work I would go with a nice Opteron something along the lines of the Opteron 175 or even 180.

Opteron 180
Epox 9npa+ Ultra
2GB of OCZ Platinum EL
eVGA 7800GTX
Coolermaster Stacker 810
Seasonic S12-500

I would then spend the rest on a nice monitor like maybe the Dell 2405.

Is a 7800GTX really necessary? Most CAD programs don't care about high-end video cards, provided they support the latest DX and OpenGL specifications. Even if you dropped down to a 7800GT (still might be overkill), you could spend the extra $150(~) on another 2GB of RAM.

I sold a ATI FireGL video card last month that would fitted nicely with your CAD program. Still can find others on eBay at reasonable prices..

ATI FireGL

Good Hunting!

True, but with the money he has, why not go for the GTX for future proofing. The machine will also at least be able to run all new games and future for quite a while if he gets the urge to play some games on it. Why go for 4GB's of memory, that's really not necessary for AutoCad, I do think you need 2GB's though it will chew up some memory but I don't think 4GB's will be utilized. If you stick with 2GB's you can still run it at 1t.

Opteron Dual Core would be good. Like GamerExpress suggested.
2 Gigs of Ram.
Same fast hard drive for operating system. Raptor or maybe SCSI.

Video card, everyone thinks differently on this one. You may do away with regular prosumer video card, but workstation card would suit your needs better. Forget about gaming though. Workstation video cards run expensive, 200+ entry level cards.

You can check out http://www.cadalyst.com/cadalyst/ archived magazines sections,
they may have system reviews.
