I need suggestions for a simple set-top DVD player

Let me preface by saying that I know the new HD players are great. They're also out of the budget for this particular situation. :)

My old DVD player just gave up the ghost after years of faithful service so I need a basic DVD player for composite (RGB or S-video) output to a standard 27" CRT TV.

I don't care about HD/blu-ray capabilities and I have no need at all for component outputs. All I need is an inexpensive player (under $50) that won't die a few months after I buy it. One feature that I would like to have is the ability to fast forward and rewind through a video exactly the same as a VCR. The two inexpensive models I tried recently (that immediately went back to the store) could only skip to the beginning of each scene.

I don't mind purchasing online since everything I can find at the local shops either looks like it was made by a third grader, or is way outside the budget. I'm sure some of you will recommend buying a higher grade player for "future-proofing". Normally, I'd agree with that reasoning but I won't be upgrading the TV any time soon and my hard cap on the budget for a new player right now is $50,. I'd even prefer spending less than that if there is a decent machine that fits my needs.

Thanks.

Any suggestions on specific models that are reliable and likely to be in the right price range?

I bought this junky little cyberhome DVD player from Target for 20 bucks a few years ago. The thing has served me well and is still operating on my smaller TV in my bedroom. I suggest you take a look there.

I've had good results with Phillips equipment. The DVP3140 looks like it fits all of my needs very nicely. I'll give that a try. Thanks!

I appreciate the other suggestions as well. I'll keep those as back-ups if the Phillips doesn't work out. :)
