I need sticky tires.

Easy? Eh I hope so...but I need them in 225/50/15, which unfortunately is a rather uncommon size.

So far, I've found these--

Falken ZE-512
Falken ZE-912
Kumho Ecsta AST (have now)
Nitto NT 450
BF Goodrich G-Sport
Yokohama AVS ES100
Sumitomo HTR 200
Toyo Proxes-4
Toyo Proxes T1R
Pirelli PZero System (very expensive..would rather not spend $200/tire)
BFG T/A Drag Radial (would be great if I had two spare rear wheels, but alas, I do not)

The Ecstas are alright, but I'm hoping I can find something with a bit more bite. I need to work on my 60' (best 1.993), but I do think I can do better on the tire end...and as one has a slow leak, I might as well get it over with.

Sooo...what say you?

I will autox as well, though..and I don't have a pair of extra wheels. 🙁

I think I'd burn through DR's really fast, too..it's a daily driver all summer.

I think the T1-R is the best choice short of the drag radials.

I've had ES100s in the past and they're ok but not great IMHO. I will likely get Advan Sports next year when I need tires.

I may give those a shot then, thanks. Eventually I'll end up with a set of lightweight 16's, which will hopefully open up some more options.

I use these on everything I own, seem to be pretty decent for what they are. More bite than the Ecstas I used to have anyway.

Buy some cheap steel wheels and get the drag radials. It's not that hard to switch out wheels before you leave to the track or at the track.

I need rear tires anyway (one is leaking). Good call though, didn't think about cheap steel wheels. That would be doable.

Most people I know do that. They just go to the junkyard and get some steelies and get some DR and only put them on for track day.

TERRIBLE idea... If you are trying to improve at the track, one of the worst things you can do is increase your unsprung rotating mass.

If you're looking for performance, I can't recommend any of the Falken Ziex tires. Theyre great tires for DD'ing but not on the track. This is from personal fleabagging experience so I understand if you don't accept my advice.

You mean you don't get to score some pursuit grade tires? 😀

I had Proxies 4 on my Protege5. They were a lot better than the stock Dunlops. What car is this going on again?

Falken FK-452 is the tire to get for a Falken street tire; it supersedes both the ZE 512 and the ZE 912.

As a street tire it's pretty grabby. 275/40/17 on a modded 03 Cobra (on stock blower at 14 ps, KB is another story) hooked pretty good in the hot AZ 100+ deg summer on fresh asphalt from a 20 roll when they were new, enough to pick up and hold the front end. But alas it's still a street tire. I ran the ZE-512s as my DD tires until they were bald, replaced with FK-452s on all 4 corners, and it was night and day as far as grip. The 512s would spin no matter what even when they were new, but the 452s have impressive bite for a treaded tire.

Nothing like a 315 or 335 drag radial though, and once it gets chilly outside they still spin in third like any street tire.

Your best bet for both grip and all weather DD and tread life is to go with a wider performance street tire. How wide can you go on Mk2?

'91 MR2 Turbo (sig).

Just talking about this with a friend...he's wondering if he can fit 10" wide on the back. I don't know..

You're right. Guess I missed the new wisdom to dump high dollar lightweight rims for heavier steelies. Nothing makes your car faster than adding weight.

First of all not everyone has the ability to change the tires on their wheels at home when they want to, plus the advantage the drag radials will give you will infinitely outweigh the slight weight it may add. Seeing as you would get the smallest steel wheels possible I'm sure there'd be minimal weight gain even if there is any. You're not going to get 17" steel wheels and put DR on those. You're going to get something like 15's and put the DR on those. Seems like you've never done it though.

No, you missed the part where cheap 15" sheet metal steelies are actually lighter than any fancy heavy cast/forged 17/18" wheel.
