Is there a open source program that will allow me to take home movie avis and tv shows and have a menu and background music similar to Nero but for Linux/Unix?

I believe the program you are looking for is called dvdauthor.

I would be more helpful, but to be honest I'm a linux newb myself. However, this is how I found a few articles that help you get started with this:

There are some front-ends for dvdauthor that might work for what you want, qdvdauthor is one that uses QT. Nero did release a version for Linux but it's GTK1 so I really wouldn't recommend it.
