ok.....this is a long story.....I'll try to explain in steps:

* one day, computer won't boot, I can hear it's a bad sector in system.dat (3rd now, I'm RMA'ing the drive (IBM) tomorrow)

* I run scandisk....gets to sector 274,801 and locks up. keep doing it.

* I install windows on my 2nd hdd

* I boot in that windows and can now scandisk the 1st drive in windows, and it gets the system.dat fixed

* I have endless troubles making the crap boot from my 1st harddrive, it seems like *****ing windows can't just be booted from another harddrive when it's been installed on another.

* try to juggle what's master/slave, etc., etc. 10000 times

* I can make it boot, but it's a strange mix between using the windows install on drive C and D

* i copy an old system.dat I had backed up from a few weeks ago, to the windows dir on the 1st HDD (the system.dat had been reset for some reason)

* i now run ok-ish, but it's still a weird mix.....it uses most files from my install on my 1st harddrive, but some files come from the install on the 2nd hdd, I can't boot without the 2nd hdd

SO.......I'm getting a new harddrive soon and will be reinstall everything anyway, but I'd like to be able to use my puter normally so far.....and the only abnomality I've noticed so far is that when I click either new message, reply, forward or something like that in Outlook express (ie 5.5 package), it gives me an error saying that the address book couldn't be opened 🙁

now, for some goddamn reason, all the files in the windows dir I had directly copied from my mastet to my backup slave HDD (in case sh1t like this should happen) were DELETED when I installed Windows on the slave hdd (grrrrr Windows installer sucks), so I have no address book from there........so could someone please send me an address book? please include the file (i think it's *.wab) in the windows dir, and there are some more files in Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book.

thanks a lot if you'd help me with this, for your privacy i'll of course delete all the users in your address book when I get the file and will not pass on their email addresses to anyone.

or, if you could, it would be cool if you could create a new user in windows, and send me the blank address book.

this may or may not work but it's worth a try......thanks a lot!! 🙂

I'm with NOSOUP. It seems a little too coincedental that you have had three errors only with the system.dat file. To the best of my knowledge that is not one of the files that is always stored on the same place on the disk.

Have you tried doing a full surface scan of the disk? Is there just that one bad sector?

hmmm I don't have anything very special installed.....

yups, of course I've done a full scan.......every time I couldn't boot (system.dat is the Windows registry), it's found one bad sector, and system.dat was in that every time 🙁

compuwiz1......geh? didn't get that.
