i need some wireless headphones

i don't need long range or go through walls, i'll just be sitting next to the transmitter in my cubicle

it looks like IR is cheaper than RF and Bluetooth and the range should be ok

can i do better for under $50 than these Sony's at newegg ?

Look at some of the Sennheiser's. With wireless headphones, the more you spend the better you get. Or you could save yourself a lot of money and buy a pair of KSC-75's or JVC Marshmellows and blow them out of the water... 😀
