I need some video off of my DVR

I recorded a few shows on my parents DVR. It's a Scientific Atlanta 3800HD (IIRC) and we've got Adelphia Digital Cable. Anyways, I recorded a few of the Sunrise Earth shows on Discovery HD that I would LOVE to have on my computer.

I tried hooking up my external HDD to USB on the DVR, but that didn't appear to do anything. The DVR has a "Copy to VCR" option, but that's only using composite video which would dumb down the quality of the video, something I don't want.

Is there any other way I can get the video off the DVR and onto my PC without losing HD quality? The DVR has DVI, component, HDMI, firewire, and SATA ports (though I don't have an external SATA drive and I'm not even sure if the SATA port is enabled).

Thanks guys! 🙂

Sometimes you can do it over firewire if it's not protected, but I don't have any experience with cable boxes myself. You can probably do a search for your specific box over on AVS Forum to see if others have been successful in transferring stuff over the firewire port.

Edit: And when you do this (if you're able to), it's my understanding that it's just a direct copy of the transport stream, so of course no quality would be lost in that case.

IF the content is not flagged to prevent copying, and the box has its firewire output enabled (as suggested, see AVSForum for more info), you can pull the transport stream to the PC without quality loss. If it's flagged, you won't be able to copy it. I'm not sure if Discovery HD flags their shows (ESPNHD and all the pay channels do).

Interesting, didn't realize this was an option for the content.

I think I'm going to go pick up a firewire cable and see what I can do.
